Building my Theater!

Hello, I'm new to the board and I need some help.  My biggest problem is that I don't what I want to ask first :)

The room is going in my basement, the basement is mostly open and I can use a good deal of it for my room. I guess my first is this, how big does the room need to be? Here is a little info on what I hope to achieve.

I would like to have at least a 120" screen. But I don't want to spend a small fortune on audio. I want 7.1 sound but I would like to get away with buying one of the Onkyo all in one reciever/speaker packages (or a comparable brand). I wasn't sure how these reciever package would do in a large room? I wouldn't mind to have a 144" inch screen if possible, but I know that might be getting into a more expensive projector and a huge room. I say the bigger the better with a screen :)  I'm more into sports than movies, so I don't need a sound system that my neighbor can hear, but I do want good surrond sound and decent power from my audio.

Thanks for any input that might get me going in the right direction. I hope to start builing the room this fall.

Welcome to the forum.  When you start building, there is a section right below this for theaters and other large projects.  A lot of people have documented their entire build.

We can suggest much until we have a firm budget for audio.  But you also want a system that is comparable to the size of your screen.  My screen is 103" and I use speakers with 6.5" drivers for my from 3.  I have some older Polk speakers on stand for my surrounds.  I use an older Pioneer VSX-1014 receiver to power everything.  I probably have $700 tied up in this.  I did go nuts on the sub and easily have $1,500.

I am a DIY guy so my mains, sub and even my screen were built by me.  It allows the budget to go a LOT farther.  It just takes some patience and a few tools.  I built my screen over a weekend for a total of $80.  Most of the weekend build was spent waiting for paint to dry on the border.

Thank you for the response. Please move this thread if needed. Here is what I'm thinking. $1500 on a projector, $1000 on audio. Give or take a few hundred. I'm thinking 16x25 for my room. I'm probably a year away from getting the equipment so this budget could change a lot.

I would rethink the budget ratio.  You want a 120" screen, but you want a HTiB for audio?  I propose you are better off with a much smaller image and better audio.

They flutter behind you, your possible pasts.

Ok, let me ask it this way. For a 120" screen what size should the room be and how much should i expect to spend on audio(7.1)?

Don't underestimate the power of audio to enhance the movie experience.  Once the movie starts the screen almost disappears (no matter how big it is).  I can't say I enjoyed a movie less on my 61" screen compared to the massive movie theater screens.  I can say that I enjoyed a movie more due to my better sound compared to the theater.
