What is my reciever (Yamaha RXV-800) telling me regarding surround sound response?

Quite embarrassed to post these questions, but I just can't figure out what my avr's display is telling me with regard to should I expect surround sound or not.  I think I have some idea, but it is very confusing.  So, here are some examples of the display vis-a-vis the cable source.

On the left side of the display various indicators light up according to type of audio signal is being sent.  The "explanations" appear on page 6 of the manual (http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/av/english/re/RX-V800kai.pdf).  The following are examples of the different displays that I am seeing.  I would very much appreciate a "101," if possible, describing what they mean.

1.  For all channels below 100 (Comcast cable) the video signal is 480i and pro-logic and PCM are displayed.

2.  For some of the channels above 100, and with a 480i video signal, there are two different displays:
  a.  Digital and ProLogic
  b.  Digital, and then DGTL to its right.

3.  For 720p signal, the AVR displays either 2a or 2b

4.  For 1080i signals, the AVR displays either 2a or 2b.

Also, my AVR handles DTS, will this light up from a TV source?

Thanks.

Your displays look normal.

- No TV broadcast uses DTS; Dolby digital was picked as the standard for digital broadcasts so that's why you see it on all the HD broadcasts.
- Dolby digital can be anywhere from 1.0 mono to 5.1 all channels.  Your "2b" is full 5.1 signal.  "2a" is 2.0, your receiver then applies prologic II surround processing to expand that to the rest of your channels, though this is of course not as good as having all discrete channels to begin with.  Some channels/programs just aren't produced in 5.1.
- Non-HD channels, including old analog and digital simulcast channels (your "1") can use PCM stereo (same format as CDs) or Dolby depending on how Comcast decides to configure them.

Hey, Stephen, what  a great reply.  You put it all in a very understandable "nutshell."  Thanks.
