New slim PS3 announced, removes "install other OS" option, price drop

The new slim version of the PS3 comes out in September.  More info can be found here: http://kotaku.com/5340085/ps3-slims-pics-and-specs/gallery/

It doesn't look like any new features were added, but the "install other OS" option has been removed.  (I've never actually used this feature on my PS3, so I don't know what operating systems can be installed.)

You can install Linux to run on a PS3.  Not sure how many people used this feature but it was probably minimal.

They also didn't add PS/PS2 backward compatibility back in to the PS3.  This was removed about a year ago.  Rumor has it that they're going to make a firmware update at some point that includes it but I doubt it.

They are removing the Linux install from the Slim Morgan...

I think if they were going to add software PS2 emulation in they would have done so by now.  If, like me, you own a launch PS3 you will want to keep it going for just that reason as long as possible.  I had my dead BluRay drive fixed 4 times rather than have them give me a brand new PS3 just for that reasoning.  They kept sending it back to me unworking and I kept sending it back till it got fixed right.  It probably cost the service company over $100 in shipping alone.  I never buy the service contract for game systems but I bought my PS3 on ebay since I missed out on it at launch, and the one I bought came with the Target Service contract.  I am so glad it did.  It has been worth the premium I paid for the system 3 times over now.

PS1 backwards compatibility has not been removed from any PS3 model. It's PS2 that's the issue.

Sam, my first sentence was in response to the original post's questioning whether anyone used "Install other OS" and what it was for.  I wasn't suggesting that you can still install Linux on the Slim PS3.

Other than just to tinker why would one want to do this?  Would it completely overwrite the PS3 OS, or turn it into a dual boot machine?

It turns it into a dual boot machine & it's really just for tinkerers.

They have recanted on stuff like this in the past tho...

Honestly, at a certain point, backwards compatibility doesn't mean much.  I mean, right now there are tons of PS3 games.  If you have a bunch of PS2 games, odds are you either have a PS2, or you can run down and grab a PS2 secondhand at gamestop for $45.  But if you're buying new PS2 games, you're wasting your money.

I wouldn't say it's a waste of money to buy PS2 games, since some really great games have been released on the PS2 in the last few years (after the PS3 came out).  Buying a PS3 solely to play PS2 games is a waste, though.

Also, Sony patented software that allows playing PS2 games on the PS3 a few months back.  There's a rumor of them releasing it as a firmware upgrade in the future, but I think it'll probably be used to release PS2 games on the PSN Store.

I don't want universal backwards compatibility to play my stack of old PS2 disks.  Tho I have.  I've tried stuff all the way back to PS1/PS2 history including my super rare 'Black Ice' demo disk.

I want universal backwards compatibility so they can populate PSN with downloadable PS2 classics like they do with the PS1 library.

Sam, I don't think they necessarily need the BC to play downloaded games.  If/when they release PS2 games on the PSN, I'm sure they'll have a way for them to work.

I bought a slim last week to replace my old one which I sold to a friend for $100.  Compared to the original it is much quieter!  The load times seem similar but I'm not timing it - just a general impression.  Overall I'm very pleased with it!
