Dancing With The Stars Season 9

The cast was announced for Season 9 this morning. Not normal for me to start a post like this.

I saw the cast revealed this morning on Good Morning America and I thought it was an interesting cast. Paula Abdul was not one of them. I was wondering if she'd be one of the cast because of all the speculation and her interest in the past. But I'm sure it didn't make sense, she's got so many options.

Here's the list:

1. Kathy Ireland, supermodel, author and fashion CEO of Kathy Ireland Worldwide
2. Macy Gray, Grammy-winning singer
3. Melissa Joan Hart, actress and one of the stars on our wish list
4. Mya, R&B singer and actress
5. Ashley Hamilton, actor-comedian and son of Season 2's George Hamilton
6. Michael Irvin, ex-NFL wide receiver
7. Mark Dacascos, The Chairman on Iron Chef America
8. Donny Osmond, entertainer and brother of Season 5's Marie Osmond
9. Kelly Osbourne, singer and daughter of Ozzy Osbourne
10. Debi MazarEntourage star
11. Chuck Liddell, light heavyweight champion
12. Natalie Coughlin, 11-time Olympic medalist in swimming
13. Joanna Krupa, model; most recently seen on ABC's The Superstars
14. Louie Vito, snowboarder
15. Aaron Carter, singer and brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter
16. Tom DeLay, former House majority leader

I think they got all the typical ones we expect, the Olympians, the older and younger cast and one out of left field, Tom DeLay.

The Osmonds verse the Osbournes was joked about as Donny was on GMA during the cast reveal.

Too bad they couldn't pair up Joanna Krupa with Terrell Owens, we might have seen the first prime time live homicide in front of 18 million viewers.

 That's funny Pat!

I saw her yell at TO. Whose to say she won't do it to her dance pro!

True, I pity the dance pro she ends up paired with for this season.  It'd be funny if Maksim ended up as her partner since they were both on the Superstars this summer.

Melissa Joan Hart is cute, and has really done well to manage her career.

I don't watch this show, but I saw the list, and I have one major problem.

WTF is Mya doing on the list?  For god sake, she starred in the broadway version of "Chicago", she's been a professional "dancer" for a roadshow & a backup dancer before..

I hate that.  The people with lesser talent will get booted, sure.. but I have a lot more respect for someone I feel has little natural talent but makes the effort vs. a ringer.

I mean, unless Mya is drop dead incredible, what do I expect?  Broadway audiences paid to see her dance for pete sake!

They asked about Mya's Broadway dancing experience during the announcement. They said she has no ballroom dancing experience and it's different. They say anyway. I can see it's very technical and precise to do ballroom. So her experience may not help. Will be interesting to see. Perhaps that's why Paula didn't do it. Though she didn't do ballroom either.

Ok.. it's "different" but, uh, it's still professional dancing, which means even if it's different, she should have a lot less difficulty adapting as compared to someone who has never done it.

And while they've had people I thought were kind of ringers in the past, I can't see how they can make the case "it won't help".. uh, do they think there isn't precision and tight choreography in a major production like Chicago?

Dance experience can only get you so far.  Ballroom and latin dances are different than ballet or broadway or contemporary.  You have a partner, for one thing.  Mya could be awesome as part of a chorus or even a lead in a broadway production.  Look at So You Think You Can Dance.  Most of the contestants who make the Top 20 are incredible professional dancers in their style.  They try ballroom and flop.  It's a totally different ball game.

My money is on Donnie Osmond (fan base), Mark Decascos (martial arts background), Melissa Joan Hart (MILF) and Natalie Coughlin (Olympian) in the top four.

Season Premire 09/21/09

The female professional dancers looked hot as usual.  My first impressions of the guys after a whirwind two-hour opener:

1. Ashley Hamilton -- despite his back story, he's very weak and will probably make an exit Wednesday.

2. Michael Irvin -- has charisma and seems to be a very good sport.  The crowd likes him.

3. Mark Dacascos -- flexible, has rythym and great lines.  He'll stick around.

4. Donny Osmond -- the consumate showman and he can move.  Easily top 4 material.

5. Chuck Liddell -- did better than I thought he would.  His Salsa was more fun than the ballroom number -- he looked very uncomfortable.  He'll work hard and improve quickly.

6. Louie Vito -- has the luxury of a great partner to make him look really good.  He's an athlete and did well for his first night.  Let's see if he changes his hair.

7. Aaron Carter -- went for it and is a positive influence on the rest of the cast.  He has the talent to make a run for it this year.

8. Tom DeLay -- was way better than I expected.  He'll stay for a few weeks until his votes dry up.  Plus, he has stress fractures in his feet.

I liked the relay dance.  That's a nice addition to the show.

Can't wait for the women tonight.  Natalie Coughlin and Joanna Krupa looked stunning.

Michael Irvin was funny, but not a good dancer.

Tom Delay might have had a few drinks before hitting the dance floor.

Aaron Carter dances out of control so far, but has potential

Mark Dacascos is a little stiff in musicality, but also has potential

Donny Osmond has a lot of showmanship, but needs to get the basics down.

Ashley Hamilton is like a younger, taller Lorenzo Lamas with a goofier streak and no dance pizzazz.

Louie Vito has youth and coordination on his side, but can he quit smiling so much?

Chuck Liddell left no discernible impression on me.  Not a disaster, but not all that entertaining, either.

Poor Edyta, she didn't look very happy after the relay dance. Hate to see her go so soon, assuming Ashley doesn't last much longer. I can see them having George Hamilton involved in a practice session to help his son out as part of one those videos. Perhaps the Edyta fans will keep them alive.

I didn't think DeLay would be as decent as he was.

It could come down to Donny, Aaron Carter and Louie Vito. Maybe Mark Dacascos too amongst the men.

Kelly has that bubbly pop, and a good partner

Macy is just in her own world.  Plus she towers over Jonathan.  Wasn't too fond of seeing her bust her ballroom dancing cherry on TV.

Mya is one to watch.

Melissa is middling, not horrible, not great.

Joanna is a front-runner, but needs some tact.

Natalie has a lot of potential.

Kathy is a stiff dancer, didn't realize how tall she was.

Debi is also middling, probably a smidge better than Melissa, but not all that entertaining to watch or listen to.

Kathy Ireland - tall and lumbering. No musicality.

Macy Gray - trainwreck.  About as graceful as a newborn horse.  No tact and bad for TV.

Melissa Joan Hart - good but not great.  Boring.

Mya - great rythym and musicality.  Her dance experience serves her well.  it's almost unfair but oh well.
Kelly Osbourne - the biggest surprise.  She was awesome.
Debi Mazar - good but not great.  She bugs me, though.

Natalie Coughlin - gorgeous and has tons of potential.  She needs to find her groove.  She was waiting to be led.
Joanna Krupa - stunning physically and a great natural dancer.  Derek brought the best out of her.  He was a little too strong for her -- she's not ready to be led like that.

Macy gray is gone.  Joanna & Mya at the end, with Kelly and Natalie close behind.

Agreed with the comments about the ladies last night.

Didn't think what Macy said needed to be bleeped, maybe they were being extra cautious. Was it me or did Samantha Harris cut off Alec when she interviewed him after he and Natalie finished their first dance? He said something like it's just for a TV show. Maybe the director didn't like what he was saying.

Natalie was a nice surprise and I thought Kelly cleaned up pretty well and nice to see her do so well in her first dance. Kathy is tall! She looks very mature now.

I also have a negative view of Krupa because she was being such a sore sport during that Summer show, Superstars. She was yelling at T.O. because they lost a round. So Derek might have his hands full with her!

Nice tribute to Patrick Swayze.

I thought Macy was tall, but she's 6 feet tall!  She dwarfed Jonathan, who now goes back to waiting in the wings in the results show dance numbers, or as an injury fill-in partner.

No surprise on who got the boot for the men's side as the Yahoo recap guy stated, Edyta was more famous than her partner, George Hamilton's son.  Poor Cheryl, I think she was disappointed that she has to lug around her partner for at  least one more week.

What the heck was going on with Chelsea and Louie last night?  Last week they had great chemistry, and last night it seemed like he didn't even want to be there.  He put no effort at all into the dance, and was acting like he just didn't care at all for the judges comments.  Something was definitely going on, it was so awkward.  It seemed like maybe they were having a spat off screen or something.  I was shocked at the Judges 5's and 6's, I was expecting 3's and 4's.

I have to agree that the last 2 eliminations were really bad! I thought Louie deserved to go after that performance you mentioned Jeff.

Natalie didn't deserve to go. She may not have been as good as others, but I thought she was better then Louie. Perhaps the voters like his partner too.

I don't think I can take more of Michael Irvings craptastic dancing (even if he showed some improvement, most of the other guys are dancing far more fluidly that Irving).

While I didn't mind staring at Natalie's body in motion, her dancing never really connected with me, still far too robotic and life-less in emotional content.

Yes, I suspect some of the weaker surviving stars are still there partly because of their fans or fans of their professional partner. Irving's partner is a knock-out.

Been watching the most recent episoes of this and I must say that I am rooting for Kelly Osbourne to win this whole thing. I'm amazed at how far this young girl has gone in her life and she looks healthy and beautiful and she seems like she is really going on the right path in her life. I enjoy watching her dance. Oddly enough as much as I cannot stand the guy, I think Aaron Carter is doing a decent job as well. Donny Osmond is a natural performer and is a really good dancer. I've always liked him. Go Kelly!
