Advice Needed: 2x Paradigm Titans + CC-170 center or 4x Energy C-50 + C-C50 center?

Hi there,

I currently have the option of purchasing either one of the above two setups for roughly the same price and need some feedback with regards to quality, and whether or not going the Paradigm route is worth sacrificing the two surrounds for the time being. I have not heard either in person, and unfortunately cannot find a place in Toronto that carries them, so first-hand anecdotes would be greatly appreciated.

Btw, the Paradigm speakers are used (4 years), while the Energy setup is new with Warranty.

Also, which sub would you recommend to go with either setup? For the Energy, I've read good things about the ESW-V8. Not sure about the Paradigm.

Thanks!

I haven't heard either but I can give you some general advice....

Don't worry about buying used speakers.  Generally, if the speaker is going to fail it will do so right away.  If it has been working for a few years, chances are it will not break for some time.  Just make sure the used ones are in good working order before you buy them.

For the sub, look to an internet direct company like SVS and HSU.  You will get more "boom" for you money.

Hi David, thanks for advice. I'd love to get an SVS sub as I've read great things about them, but afraid they're a bit out of my budget at preset...   As an aside, would I be better off going with a $250 sub now, or waiting a while to invest more? (room is about 9' x 13')

I'd love to hear from someone who'd actually heard both speakers. Thanks!

I haven't heard the Titan's but I own a pair of the Energy C-50's. Most have discribed them as very warm, even dark sounding. They are very good speakers with good build quality and an excellent deal at the closeout prices but if you like a brighter speaker then these might not be for you. Pretty good bass output for such a small speaker.

As for the sub, decide what you really want and then wait until you can afford it. You'll be better off in the long run unless you can afford to take a loss now. That's a pretty small room so maybe you can get by with a lesser sub (a lesser sub? I think a few members just fell out if their chair!). I also think buying a used sub is a little riskier than buying used speakers.

Here's the Dayton-ES-10-Elite from PartsExpress.com. I believe it was designed by Dr. Hsu. It sometimes goes on sale for well under $200 but I haven't seen it at that price for a while. Just something else to consider.
