Just starting out - probably an easy question.

I don't have cable, I currently use a DTV converter and a DTV antenna (because I am in a location where one cannot view anything without an antenna).  Mostly I just watch movies and play games.

I have a question about whether or not I will be able to connect the antenna to the tv or htib that I'm planning to purchase -- I assume I won't need the DTV converter anymore.

The TV I am planning on getting is this: Sony KDL-40V5100  (not sure if links are appropriate, so I'm not including them)
The HTIB I am planning on getting is this: Onkyo HT-S9100THX

I have a PS3 and a PS2 if that is relevant.

Basically, I don't see any way that I can connect the coax cable from the antenna to either the tv or the htib.  Perhaps I am missing something because I do not really have any idea what I'm doing.

What is that connection in the bottom, left hand corner of the picture?  That's right.  It's an F-connector labeled Cable/Antenna.

God... I've been looking at that picture (and pictures on other sites) for the last few hours trying to figure this out and it is right there.

I imagined that it would be right there and obvious (and I just wasn't seeing it), but I could not see it.  I then convinced myself that new tvs just must not have such connections.

Thanks for smacking me back to reality :)

Since you are using an OTA signal into the internal tuner, you would then connect the optical out (left of the HDMI connection) to the HTiB using an optical cable.  This will give you DD 5.1 from the HD shows which support it (most HD shows do), and stereo PCM from the others.  Note that in order to get digital surround from your PS2/PS3, you will still need an optical, coax or (for the PS3) HDMI connection to the HTiB receiver.  You may think it cheaper on cables to run everything though the TV, but running outside audio sources directly to the TV and then out through the TV's digital audio port yeilds stereo 2.0 in 99% of the sets out there.  The only thing that will give DD 5.1 through the optical out on the TV is the internal TV tuner.

Thanks for the help!  My account got suspended for some reason, so I was unable to post again until today, so thanks!

I do have another question:  My TV came about a week ago, and it is the KDL-40V5100 that I said I was going to get.  It was a more entry level tv, so I was expecting some flashlighting, but what I have I'm not sure if it is excessive or not, since this is the first TV I've ever had like this.  It seems excessive, but I thought I would post a pic here and see what you guys thought.  Thanks for any input!

Have you calibrated the picture yet?

"sort of" would be my answer.  I used the THX video optimizer on my finding nemo disk (still waiting on an actual calibration disk to arrive).  I also left the DVD paused on that particular scene (in the picture) and tried a bunch of different settings for the picture and it never went away.

EDIT:  I tried extremes for lots of the different picture settings just to see if anything would make it go away.

EDIT2: here is where it is after messing with some screws because I heard that might work and even though I was scared about doing it, I figured I was returning it anyway:

I also forgot to mention that this is the TV that needs to be upgraded via a flash drive right out of the box.  I did that tonight also, and it did not do anything noticeable.

I read on another forum that some people have had success by tightening/loosening screws in the back.  I was very scared to do this, but figured I'd be returning it anyway, so I did it and it appears to me to be noticeably better.  This is what it looks like now:

Does that seem to be "about right" for an LCD to you guys (since I assume many of you are way more knowledgeable about these than I am).

Post this in the TV and Display section.  There are professional calibrators there that can help.

(The previous post/thread I made in this forum seems to have been deleted when this was moved to here, I am reposting that in here, just because it gives a little bit more information and I want to give you guys as much info as I can):

I had been posting this in the "basics" forum, but Robert_J said I might get better help in here.

My Bravia 40V5100 is about 1-2 weeks old now.  It is my first LCD TV and am an definitely not familiar with what is "normal" for LCD tvs as far as "flashlighting" or "clouding."

I did immediately notice what is either called "flashlighting" or "light bleeding" on the TV, which initially looked like the below image on black screens after about 30 minutes of the TV being on (this is a sceen during a dvd -- non blu ray -- of smoking aces where the scene goes black in an elevator, played on a PS3 and paused during that spot).  I tinkered with the settings a lot, just to see if anything would make it go away, nothing did.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f339/corporateclaw/IMG_1044.jpg (shot taking with a 15 second shutter with a cannon powershot A710 IS if that is relevant).

I realized that the 40V5100 needed to be upgraded, so I did that and I also went to Best Buy to see if I could see how this model of TV was maybe supposed to look -- my only friend that is a Home Theater buff is only into Projectors, so he claims to not know anything about LCDs.  At Best Buy it was too bright to tell if the model they had was doing it.

The upgrade did not appear to help (I did it myself, using one of the recommended flash drives on Sony's website).  At this point I had read several people saying that using a glasses cleaning cloth and/or tightening the screws helped, so I did that, figuring that at this point the TV is messed up and needed to be returned anyway.  That seems to have made it better.  Now the TV looks like this (same scene, same camera technique):

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f339/corporateclaw/IMG_1047.jpg
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f339/corporateclaw/IMG_1048.jpg

It is definitely better, but I can still notice it when I'm watching a movie in a dark room.  My problem is that I have no idea if it is "normal" or not.

I still have time where I can return it to either Dell or Sony and try again with a new one.  The only reasons I haven't done that yet, is because(1) i'm not sure if this is just the way this TV  is supposed to look in the dark and (2) if that is the way this TV is supposed to look, I'm scared to return it and maybe get one that is actually broken.

(thank you for reading my very long post, I was trying to get all possible relevant information posted).
