My parents are in their mid 70's and told me today that they would like to add a home theater setup to there tv.  After talking with them for a while found that what they really want is to be able to hear and understand the tv better. So, here is my question......

can i just add a couple of surround speakers to there tv setup....

its a Sony 42" trinitron tube tv and has an rca type audio out

Or.....should I find them an inexpensive home theater in a box

any suggestions?

thanks in advance

Chances are you can't just add speakers to a TV like that.  You'll probably need some kind of amplifier to drive them.  But it would help if we had the exact model number of the TV set so we can take a look at the manual.

What are their video sources?  Do they have cable?  Satellite?  A digital set-top box?  (I'm assuming this is an analog TV.)  Do they have a DVD player?

If so, post the make and model of each of those components so we have an idea of how many and what kind of connectors we'll have to play with.

Chances are a small HTiB will be your best solution, but we'll be in a better position to make recommendations when we have that equipment list.
