Screen flicker when connecting HDMI Bluray to HDMI on HTIB receiver

HDMI Gurus, please help.

When I connect my Samsung BD-1590 Bluray player via HDMI to my Onkyo HT-S3200, I am getting a flicker effect (like the signal is corrupt or disrupted on the main menu). So I then connected the HDMI from the Bluray directly to the HDMI input on my Panasonic Plasma TV and it is just fine (no flicker, no problem).

So, I then changed to a different HDMI port on my Onkyo receiver and still got the same thing.

Question, Are there settings that need to be changed when you are hooked up from a Buray player to a receiver. I have 3 HDMI through puts on the receiver. This is no high-end receiver by any means, but it was released this year. Also, I have to connect a digital optical cable to the receiver to the Bluray.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Scott

Scott,

Possibly one of your HDMI cables is bad?  There should be no difference with the HDMI going through the receiver.

BTW - There's no advantage connecting the HDMI through the receiver since yours does not process audio through this connection.  Only reason to do it this way is using the receiver as a switch.

Can you get a bad HDMI cable? I thought that HDMI cables were basically the same. Maybe I was wrong. With an HDMI cable, it is a digital signal with 0's and 1's. If there is no connection, it will not work period, because the signal is digital.

Sure, cables can be bad. 1's and 0's, yes, but remember there is more than one path inside the cable.  It doesn't hurt to try a different one.  It does not have to be a super expensive one, either.  Don't waste money overpriced cables....

I will try a different cable and see what happens.  Thanks.

Question, do you usually need to change audio settings on a bluray movie? I just got the bluray player in the mail and connected it tonight. Aside from the flicker from the bluray player, I put in CARS and connected the digital audio cable, and was not getting any digital signal. I can only seem to play the disc in Dolby Pro Logic II. The receiver is not recognizing a digital signal for Dolby. The receiver does not output TrueHD and DTS-HD. Any advice.

I had an HDMI cable in my system that would cause intermittent drops in video/audio.  It's possible for it to be in a "semi-working" state, right on the edge of problems.  It's just that the problems are of this obvious variety, it's not going to be subtle.

So definitely try both the cables you are using when going through the receiver, with a direct connection.

As for the audio settings:
- make sure player set to bitstream output, not PCM, over the optical, and
- yes, for some discs that default to a lossless 5.1/7.1 PCM track, you'll have to switch it over manually in the disc menu to regular Dolby or DTS, otherwise you'll get only a 2 ch PCM downmix.
