Surround speaker problems

I have a Yamaha HTR-5935 surround sound system.  I have 2 front speakers, 1 center, 2 surrounds, and a sub.  I have the DVD connected to the TV with an HDMI cable.  I have the audio from the TV to the receiver connected with an optical cable.

I am using the Avia II home theater set up disc.  In the audio section, there is a portion that tests the sound from each speaker to ensure they are connected properly.  When the disc emits a tone from either the right or left surround speaker, the sound comes from both speakers rather than just the one it is supposed to come from.

The disc also checks phasing.  I double checked all wires and I have the pos and neg wires connected correctly to both the receiver and speakers.  In the phasing section of the disc, it checks phasing by emitting a "pushing" sound from both speakers, then a "pushing" sound from one speaker and a "pulling" sound from another speaker.  My two surrounds emit the "pushing" sound, but there is no sound when the "pulling" sound is shown to be playing.

I can check the speaker levels using the receiver and each speaker plays individually at the right times.

I have the receiver set to Dolby II.

What is wrong?

You need to connect the DVD to the receiver with the optical cable.  The connection coming from your TV is mainly for the internal tuner.  Most likely the TV is passing stereo to the receiver.

(1) Connect DVD player straight to the receiver, *not* through the TV.  You lose 5.1 doing it this way.
(2) Make sure DVD setup menu, audio set to "bitstream" for DD + DTS, not "PCM".

After this, should be on plain Dolby digital, not Pro logic II, and the problems should go away.

What kind of cable do I use to connect the DVD to the receiver?

EDIT  --  Nevermind, the optical port on the DVD was hard to see.

Ok, I have the DVD connected straight to the receiver with an optical cable.  I have Dolby Digital and DTS in the DVD set up menu set to bitstream.

On the receiver display, Dolby Digital and Dolby PL are showing.

On the Avia II set up disc, during the speaker identification section the surround speakers definitely emit sound separately.  When the sound is produced for either of the front speakers, the sound for the speaker specified is loud, but there is still some sound coming out of the other speaker.  The same thing happens for the surround speakers.  When the center or sub are on, there is no sound from the fronts or surrounds.

Is this normal?

Are you seeing all 5 channel indicators light up, or just L/R?  If you see all of them you are probably OK. You might try setting the "extd sur." on the Yamaha to "off" to see if the leakage is being caused by that.

All 5 channel indicators are lit up.  Is it normal for only the L and R to light up when watching TV?

How do you set the extd sur to off?

There's a button on the remote marked "extd sur" (number key 7) which should work if the remote is in "amp" mode.

TV- yes normal to only have L&R for the vast majority of the channels.  You should be able to get full 5.1 from some of the digital HD channels though, like an ABC or Fox.  Do a channel scan to pick up any digital channels.  Also look for settings for the TV audio to select "dolby digital" output or bitstream rather than PCM.

Thank you very much!  I actually have surround sound now and it sounds so much better.  I didn't even realize before that the rear speakers weren't doing what they were supposed to do.
