Yamaha RX-V1065BL or Denon AVR 890

I am new to this forum and I am looking for some advice on what receiver is better.  My parents old receiver has went out and they have narrowed it down to these two.  It will. be running Bose speakers in a medium sized room. 

Any information anyone can give would be great.

They are about equal in quality and features. The Denon does have one more HDMI input and one more optical input, if that makes a difference to them. The yamaha's remote will probably be easier to learn and use. Sorry 'bout the Bose speakers though..........

Thanks for the reply.  I will tell them about the extra inputs.  I don't think it will matter to them they are just running a DVD, and satellite box.  They are pretty standard.

 

So what is wrong with the Bose speakers.  I thought they were supposed to be pretty good.  I am just learning this stuff myself so sorry if I sound stupid.  What speakers do you recommend.  They will not change them out, the  Bose are just fine for what they do.  But For me when it comes time to get a good set I would like to know were to start.

Bose are WAY overpriced, and just not cared for in the home theater world. Do a forum search for Bose, and see what turns up, at any home theater forum. See here: www.firstadopter.com/fa/archives/001749.html and click on links there, to see why. You can buy so much better for the money, or even cheaper.

Speakers are the most important part of an HT system. Everybody says to listen to as many different ones, as you can, and get what sounds best to you. You're the one that will be listening to them. SVS is an online only company. They are known to make one of the best subs there is. They also make very good speaker sets. Since they are online only, you can't listen first. There are zillions of choices for speakers, depends on budget, room size, speaker size constraints, if you need really loud, deep bass or not.

What is wrong with Bose -- massively overpriced, and optimized more for very small size/appearance which sacrifices sound quality.  The Lifestyle/Acoustimass series in particular, the satellites are trying to cover a very wide frequency range with a single size 2.5" driver (x2), which doesn't really cut it at either the high end or low end.  Whereas most normal design speakers have separate tweeters and woofers (+ sometimes mid-range driver), drivers more specialized for high & low frequencies.  Plus the sats don't go down very low, so the bass module has to go higher than normal (which makes it easier to localize the subwoofer, undesirable), and the module itself is rather small + small drivers so doesn't really extend for low end response (20-50 hz region).  Now, if all this sold for 1/3-1/2 the price, people wouldn't bag on Bose as much, since other speakers at that price also make sacrifices of sound quality for cost & smaller size.  But at their current price, you can either get equivalent or slightly better sound for way less, or massively better sound for the same.
