Who is Raymond Bernard?

I was going over Criterion titles, and I saw the name of a French director and screenwriter, Raymond Bernard. He appears to have had a long career, but I have never heard of him before. Could anyone give a bio of him and/or comments about his films?

Haven't seen Les Miserables yet, but Wooden Crosses is an excellent WWI film (not quite as good as All Quiet on the Western Front, though).  A little clichéd now, but this was before they were clichés.  Where it really excels is the filmmaking technique, which appears to be 15-20 years ahead of its time.
