The Last of the Mohicans changes were more than just trims. He also altered the music and added scenes back in.
Depending on the degree of changes, I may or may not be OK with what he does for Heat. I'll wait to see the reviews.
As for Warner not offering both versions - it probably depends greatly on the studio/filmmaker they are working with. In the case of both Amadeus and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, I suspect having the extended versions was a decision by Saul Zaentz Company and Morgan Creek, respectively. And Oliver Stone clearly prefers the longer cut of JFK.

Such releases without theatrical cuts but with director input/approval are almost always at the behest of the director and not the studio. Just so the ire is properly targeted.

Great, I've got it on VHS as well as DVD!
From what I understand, the movie is two or three minutes shorter so there cannot be that much difference, as long as Mann doesn't mess with the bank robbery scene, i'm good.

FYI Josh - Manhunter is coming to Blu on 9/15/09 from MGM as part of the "Hannibal Lecter Anthology" along with Silence of the Lambs (already available) and Hannibal (new to Blu). No news on a separate release, or on what version of the film will be on the disc.
