What Happened to Sig Pics?

Hello,

Ever since the transition, I have not been able to mine or anyone else's sig pics. I tried to edit, but it looks like there is no option to post an image to a signature. Is there something I'm missing. If not will the feature be coming back?

Thanks

Funny thing is that was the first thing I asked the Huddler folk for months ago, they promised me they'd add that feature in the near future. I hope they do. I was just chatting about this with Parker on PM, no sig pics no happy.

I'm sure they'll reappear at some point, but -- and this is me speaking strictly for myself -- at the moment I'm savoring their absence.

More and more people were ignoring the permitted dimensions and/or file sizes, and it's a real pleasure not to have to deal with enforcing those limits because they simply cannot be violated right now.

Damn criminals is what they are!

So glad you added a smiley after that Michael. If they do decide to add that little bit of colour back to the forum, I'll be sure to stay within the file size limit. Thanks for the reply.

I, OTOH, had avatars turned off, but sig pix enabled in the old software.

I found the avatars distracting but preferred the sig pictures for some reason.

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

As I recall, Steve, your were always within limits. I suspect a lot of people never even bothered to notice that limits existed. Add up all the images, and it really can slow down a thread's load time.

I don't mind avatars so much, unless they're animated. Those make me crazy. You want people to concentrate on what you say? Don't put up a big ol' distraction right next to it.

Yeah, I'm not big on the sig pics either, especially since we already have avatars.  Definitely should keep them small-ish -- I'd suggest adding an overall sig height limit, not just pic size.  And now that we have to scroll so much more than before, I may find myself using the no sig pics display option when they start coming back.

I miss both the sig pic and animated avatars. I think they helped add personality to the person who is posting and avatars traditionally should be fun. Animating them adds more to it. My old avatar was one of Pixar's birds making funny faces. That just can not be conveyed with out animation. Used to be you could turn them off if you did not like them. Avatars also help recognize who has posted quickly while scrolling with out having to read their names. If we really wanted to be strict, we could have a rule that one's avatar is a real picture of him, but how fun would that be?

The sic pic also helped see into the personality of the poster. My old sig had a banner link to my other hobby - my weather website. I don't think these took up nearly as much real estate as that big white space to the right ( sorry couldn't resist) Not having these sig pics is adding to the lack of color and the cold textbook feeling the new style has.

This thread seems to be several years old.  I just joined this forum this evening and would like to add what you seem to be calling a sig picture but I don't see a way to do that.

I see a lot of these pictures on the various posts I'm reading so my guess is that this feature has returned.

In my profile under the generic picture is a link about replacing the picture.  Clicking it takes me to a dialog box where I can add a path to a picture on my server or upload a picture but there's no indication of what size limits in pixels or file size I should follow. Then there's the interesting invitation to use one of the photos supplied by the forum.

How do I see what you are offering as sig picture choices?

Hi Richard!  Welcome to the HTF.

I cannot answer your last question about picture choices...but I can tell you this thread is really only a couple of months old.  The original post was made back in July.  You can see the post dates in the upper left-hand-corner of each post (just above the avatars that you are posting about).

I believe, IIRC, that the image you submit will be properly sized for you by the forum software.  If so, no worries there.

The forum just underwent a major software change a few months ago and all us old-timers are still coming to grips with the new layouts and changes.  After all, we all know change is bad!  :o)  One of the changes are that signature pictures are no longer avaiable (for now)...but avatar (pictures next to our names) are.  And, recently, another format chang caused the avatars to be shrunk to a pretty small size...an issue that is still under discussion by the platform team.

Find an image that suits you...out of any on your hard drive...and give 'er a whirl!  And, again, welcome!

Welcome to the forum indeed, Richard.

The picture of your avatar will be approx. 175 x 175 pixels. It will be stored in your profile, where people can see it.

The version of the avatar that will be displayed above your posts (and at some other places), will be smaller however. Roughly 50 x 50 pixels, but users can click on it to see your profile page.

Unfortunately, 50 x 50 is a bit too small to use your avatar as a means of communicating with the crowd.

 Cees,

Thanks for this response.  That's the data I was seeking. I'll design an avatar at 175 x 175 and submit it.
