Yamaha HTR-5740 Help and Advice

Alright, my name is Cameron and I'm looking at putting in a sound system for my recently bought Sony KDL-32XBR9. I just wasnt getting enough from the TV speakers when using the Playstation 3 or my Bell HD Satellite, and I remebered my father had an old AV Receiver downstairs.
Anyways, to get to the point, I'm not a genius when it comes to connecting these hometheatre systems and was wondering what kind of speakers would go best with this. My price range would be up to $500  and it supports 6 channels. Also, im not sure how to connect my Satellite or PS3 to it, but would I run an Audio Optical Output from the TV to the receiver so that it would work when changing from one piece of hardware to another? Thanks for the help in advanced, as you can see Im kind of new to this.

In that price range lately I've been recommending the Energy Take Classic 5.1 (~$400 vanns.com , others), or various packages you can look at from thespeakercompany.com

You hook the satellite and PS3 digital audio outputs (optical or coax) directly to the receiver.  You don't run the optical from the TV to the receiver; that's only for when using the TV's internal tuner which you typically wouldn't use with satellite (unless you have an over-the-air antenna for local channels).
