Hooking up

I have just purchased new kit and I have everything working except I cannot get the sound out of my amplifier - only through the TV speakers. I have hooked up everything according to the instructions I think but no sound through the home theatre.
The home theatre system - Sony HT-SS100 - indicates that the HDMI Out goes to the HDMI IN on the TV. The HDMIs from the Sat box and the Blu-ray go the the HDMI In ports for Sat In and BD In on the amplifier. I have a Toslink cable going from the TV to the Output Digital Optical on the TV. Finally, I have Red/White cables from Audio Out on the TV to the TV ports on the amplifier.
The speaker test worked so I know they produce sound.
Does this all sound ok?
If so, then maybe there is something I need to do on the specific machines. On the TV I do select External Speakers but no sound is forthcoming so I have to go back to TV speakers. When I put a DVD into the Blu-ray I get no sound.
I also have an older DVD player which is connected via Scart cable to the TV. No other cables are connected via this DVD player.
Any advice gratefully accepted.

Your connections all sound correct to me, so it's a bit of a mystery.
No problems with the video from the BD through the home theater to the TV? What indicators are lit on the front panel display of the SS100?

On the BD, make sure the audio settings/audio output priority is set to "HDMI".  Audio(HDMI)=auto, BD Audio = mix.  But still it seems you are still supposed to get 2 channel surround even if this wasn't correct.

The red/white outputs on the TV & the optical from the TV -> the home theater aren't going to be doing anything, unless you have the TV hooked up to an aerial and are viewing the set's internal tuner instead of the satellite.

I would perhaps try with all the "Bravia sync" aka "control for HDMI" features turned completely off, to see if that is interfering with operation.  Also make sure you have no "mute" function anywhere mistakenly turned on.

Do I feel stupid. I have just realised that the volume was way down so now I can hear things. Sorry to be a nuisance and thanks.
