PC 5.1 surround help

Hi, I have an HP computer and a modern yamaha receiver and speakers. I installed the AC3filter on my computer and hooked up to receiver with a SPDIF cable. Everything was working fine, I could cycle through the different sound modes such as 5ch stereo and movie modes. But now AC3filter seemed to stop working and the receiver says 'straight' and will only play through the front speakers and sub. Also, I have never been able to get the full 5.1 output, only stereo through the SPDIF. I played around with AC3filter and searched through troubleshooting but am still stumped. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Is the source you are trying to play actually a 5.1 source (DVD, ect.)?

i can play through nero which says 5.1. I'm more concerned with the fact that my receiver will no longer give me the choice to change from 'straight'. My system sounds ten times better playing music through 5 speakers instead of 2.

that sounds like the receiver.  What's the model of the yamaha?  You should be able to change modes on your receiver reguardless of how the signal is coming into the receiver.  If it's saying "straight" and you can't change it, it sounds like the receiver is locked in 2ch mode or process direct is on or something.
