No one else covered the space program the way he did. His knowledge and enthusiasm were great.

The lack of responses to this news icon's passing is shocking to say the least. The afternoon he announced JFK's death is something I will always remember as I watched him take his glasses off and announced his death. R.I.P. Uncle Walter!

I'm surprised by the lack of reaction too, Robert. The younger members here probably don't remember Mr. Cronkite, but the rest of us certainly do. He defined TV news for many of us.

RIP Mr. Cronkite. Dan Rather had taken over by the time I was old enough to care to watch the news but my Mother always told me he was the "newsman of newsmen."

It's a Friday night so I'd assume that internet traffic is probably slower than normal. I just got home and saw it on Yahoo.

Man...this news is really a punch to the gut. Though I hadn't seen him on television in years, Cronkite was one of the key people that formed my interest in national and international news at a young age. A very sad evening...

I was less surprised than you seem to have been Michael. I've been expecting the news since his family made it known the Cronkite's health was in decline a few weeks ago.
It does seem somehow fitting that he passed away over the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. It is a bit of a shame that he was still with us for the date of the launch, but not for the landing and first steps, though.
For those of us of a certain age, Cronkite was almost as much a part of the space program as the astronauts themselves. He was certainly the astronaut's favorite newsman. (There's a scene in Apollo 13 where the astronauts are gathered at Jim Lovell's house to watch Armstrong's first steps on the moon, Someone asks which network to tune in and the shouts of "Walter!" easily drown out the tiny minority plumping for Jules Bergman of ABC. Of course, Cronkite's voice and image opens the film, via archived footage from that night.
