The story on spam

Is this new software easier for spambots to penetrate, or what?

Adam, forgive me, but I'm going to take your question -- which originally appeared as a reply to a spammer's post -- and move it to Feedback for an answer.

Just to be clear: Adam Lenhardt did not start this thread. I did, using his post to anchor it.

It's not that this software is easier to penetrate. It's that we're working with Huddler to develop and fine-tune an entirely different approach to anti-spam defense than the one we used on the old vBulletin platform. I don't want to go into details, because I don't want to hand out tips to the spammers about how to circumvent the system, but let's just say that what we're hoping to achieve is something that will be more selective. The old system caught a lot of spam, but it also caught a lot of legitimate posts that were then held up -- sometimes for as much as a day -- until one of us caught up with the increasingly long list of posts to be reviewed and either released or sent to the bit bucket. We're hoping to end those delays, but it's going to take a while to find the right settings, and in the meantime, you're likely to see more spam than you're used to.

So please keep doing what you've been doing: Report it, and we'll get rid of it. Those reports are genuinely helpful, and we really appreciate them, along with your patience while we try to get this right. Thanks!

Reporting has a "criticality" option. Any suggested "criticality" to choose for forum spam?

The written reason is more important. If you say "spam", that's all we need.

Adam and Dave:

As with any Spam filter some of them get through. It is very helpful when members like yourself alert us so we can deal with it. Also, as Michael suggested put in the title of "Spam" in your report to us really would help us out.

Anyone else getting a sudden increase in SPAM email (mainly from the various versions of blogs*pot*.com domain) since last Friday?  All of them come w/ image attachments for the entire ad as well as a highly suspicious looking claims for how to unsubscribe and/or report them as SPAM.

Was wondering if something happened here w/ HTF that might've led to that for me since I hadn't signed up for anything in quite some time -- and this new wave of SPAM is only targeting one of a few different email accounts that I regularly check.

Man --

I haven't noticed any recent uptick in spam email on my HTF email account (or any other, for that matter). The forum itself is being spammed more than ever, but a lot of it is being caught before it appears.

Frankly, this is likely a sheer coincidence.

I have noticed a huge uptick in lottery winning, Nigerian scams spam, including one that has establised a fund to replay people who have been scammed....I just need to send them my banking info so they can get my money back.   I should mentionthat these are in my personal account which has nothing to do with HTF....
