Surround issues with my Ps3

Hi folks, I'm new here, looks like an interesting site! I hope I'll find my answer here :)

Here is my setup: I have a Samsung HDTV, model LNT4669F. For the audio, a Logitech Z-5500 with only one optical input. I have two consoles (Ps3 and X360) and an HD television Receiver.

The problem I have is with the surround sound coming from my Ps3.

First, let me tell you about my Xbox 360. It's plugged with HDMI in the television set, and the television set is plugged in my sound system with optical cable. Everything works fine here, the 5.1 signal is brought from the console to the TV, and the TV sends it flawlessly in my sound system. Surround works great. The advantage here is I don't need to unplug/plug the optical cable from the 360 to the HD television receiver when I switch from a video game to a television program.

In the case of my Playstation 3 though, the system is plugged in the exact same way (Ps3 > Hdmi > TV > Optical > Sound system), but the surround is not carried from the Ps3 to the TV set. But if I plug the Ps3 directly in the sound system with the optical cable, the surround is flawless. But then, I'll have to constantly unplug/plug my optical cable when I want to switch from my Ps3 to my 360.

There's a bunch of audio options in the Ps3's audio menu, and if I use the same settings than my optical cable with my Hdmi, it'll still won't work.Let me reformulate: It works as long as I stay in the XMB (home menu where you access options), but if I launch a game, I'll loose the sound.

Is there an option I missed? Is this something impossible to achieve because of something Sony decided when building the Ps3? Why does the 360 works fine, but the Ps3 doesn't wanna?

Thanks in advance for any useful advices/tips :)

There's some funky copy protection rules about forwarding audio from HDMI -> optical.  Also there is negotiation protocol between TV & external device about what kind of audio it accepts.  Hard to know what's at fault.  It's very rare that you can even get the 5.1 at all going through TV like that, it's surprising Xbox works that way.  Most TVs you get 2.0 max, and sometimes nothing.

Get an optical switcher so you can just connect everything directly to the Logitech.
