Pre-90s catalog on Blu - A comprehensive list

#1
Rating: 0
With the modest popularity of the 'Catch-Up' titles thread, and the interest on this board in older catalog titles, I thought this list would be a fun one to compile. This list is for theatrically released feature length films, and is US releases only. Please bring to my attention any releases I may have neglected.

A few things I found interesting by doing this:

- Sony has spread their pre-80s catalog releases out pretty well, going 4-4-5 in the 50s-60s-70s

- Disney has released (or plans to release) only in the earlier pre-90s decades - only 4 releases, all pre-60s

- Universal has a lot of catching up to do, which has left them with only 5 pre-90s releases, all in the 80s

- Paramount dips their toe into the pre-70s water by releasing 1 40s title this Fall

- Warner is the most prolific studio of every decade except the 40s

- Criterion is doing awesomely for their size (17 releases)

Good work - definitely interesting.

For The Exorcist, you might want to mention it's the newer version and coming in the fall.

Well the 1970s list isn't that bad in terms of numbers.

I've been shopping the U.K. for some classics like Zulu, Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers (sold seperately), Great Expectations, The Ipcress File, Black Narcissus, The Eagle Has Landed, Capricorn One, and I'm planning to get The Dam Busters with Michael Redgrave this September. I'm playing all Wee-juns these days as I've been emancipated by Momitsu.........

Rachael, the big disc cat! I used to be looking for Hi-Vision Laserdiscs & D-Theater tapes, now I'm looking for HD-DVD's and Blu-rays.

I survived the AFI top 100 Film Challenge! I've seen them all.

Did you get yours from HKFlix.com? I've been planning on buying it and from the reviews at DVDBeaver, it plays just about everything so far. I'm already region free on DVD via my Oppo. Might as well finally buy that player to play all these Blu-rays I've been buying on the inexpensive side (bargain hunting can sometimes be a pain in the ass, I ALWAYS throw away the Digital Copy bullshit and superflous crap where a booklet should've been.)
So I take it this thread isn't considering imports i.e. titles from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, UK, Germany, France, Spain and other places? Oh well, guess I'll look on theimportforums for that particular info.

While I don't have a multiregion player, the UK is the place to look these days for deeper catalogs and Classics.

So far I have the UK BD's of Ipcress File, Zulu and Black Narcissus.

There are several upcoming titles I have my eyes on, hoping they're not region locked.  The Innocents, The Ladykillers (1955), Angel Heart, Near Dark and several others.

Just to be clear - many of the UK releases noted above are region-free and play in any Blu-Ray player, and that includes Iprcress, Black Narcissus, Capricorn, Zulu, and Eagle Has Landed - also have Escape From Athena and, from France, Luc Besson's Leon and The Big Blue, also region-free.  DVD Beaver has a good list of region-free imports and there are several other sites that do as well.  It's a shame, in fact, that this site doesn't.

I dunno but for some reason I get this vibe from this site they don't like talking about importing for some reason and the majority of users are Region 1 locked. I could ask in the DVD section or After Hours to see which people on the site are region-free capable, have them list their player and sites they use for importing. By the way, DVDBeaver shouldn't use YesAsia, they're damn expensive and DDDHouse.com, play-asia.com, k2dvd.com (1492: Conquest of Paradise marked down to $2.90! Region 3 NTSC) and other sites are far cheaper. But I take it alot of persons must think OH NOES THEY'RE ALL BOOTLEGS! HKFlix.com carried titles from notorious bootlegger PanMedia and my most despised company who're lazy, mainly redistribute and finally jack up the price which is Tai Seng. From DDDhouse you can get the original, non-slapped on stickers versions of Universe, Mega Star, Mei Ah and other company titles Tai Seng has the need to be lazy and call their own.
Speaking of which, I'm going to import Batman Returns BD from Amazon.co.uk and other titles. No way am I going to purchase the BD Anthology set for two films I have zero desire owning. Those're last two.

Why don't you start that list and see if the admins shut down? I'm willing to bet that they won't.

I don't think HTF has any problems with imports.  In fact, there's several threads in this section alone that are exclusively devoted to imports.  And with both looser region code separation (for instance, Japan and the US are the same region) and usage by the studios, it's a valid topic for discussion.
"Would I rather be feared or loved? Um...easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me."
--Michael Scott, The Office

I don't cover imports because I don't import. It's really that simple. If someone wants to contribute to this thread (or make their own) with a similar topic for non-US discs they don't need my permission.

Yes but other people do.

If these lists are only intended to benefit yourself then why bother starting a thread?  Just use an Excel spreadsheet on your PC.

If you intend these types of lists to be a useful resource for others (aside from yourself), Imports should be included - especially Region A and non-Region locked titles.

Not to mention the many non-US members we have here.

I expect a thread like this to be a potential resource for some people, not for everyone in every scenario. It takes a lot of time to compile a list like this. I only do it up to the point where it interests me because otherwise I'm spending my free time in a manner that I don't find as worthwhile. This isn't some catch-all service. I know US releases best so that's what I stick with, and I offer it up in the chance that another few users are interested. Maybe they will be, maybe they won't be. If some people are interested in different information, so be it, they can make their own their list. Frankly, I find the attitude of criticizing a thread that doesn't fit your exact parameters pointless - people have the option of not reading or posting in my thread, or making their own thread. Seems pretty simple to me.

Just noticed this thread was in the 'sticky' portion at the top of the HD Software page, which may have contributed to the perception that this was a thread I made in some official capacity.

Thanks for the list.  Being a fan of older movies, knowing what's out or coming on Blu-ray is helpful.

I do appreciate his list the way it is. I am pretty sure that Brandon would not mind if you would add an import list and I would like to see that one, too but I also know that it is a lot of work to cover the Blu-Ray releases of the rest of the world.

I recently got the Blu-Ray BOYS FROM BRAZIL from England and it plays fine in my player. This film, if released in the USA, could really use a stereo remix like the early James Bond films have had. The music score survives in terrific stereo, so I think it could be done. The film seems to cry out for a better, fuller soundtrack. The Blu Ray is mono only, as the film originally was.

John,

Was surprised to see just how good BOYS FROM BRAZIL looks on Blu-ray.

Had it imported here as well.

Amen, Ronald. The domestic DVD is pretty blurry and if I remember right, isn't anamorphically enhanced, so getting this with a beautiful, crisp picture was quite a treat.

Fantastic resource for Blu Ray shoppers; keep up the good work, particularly with updates, as long as possible.

P.S Tarantino has finally bested Pulp Fiction.

So I take it this thread isn't considering imports i.e. titles from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, UK, Germany, France, Spain and other places? Oh well, guess I'll look on theimportforums for that particular info.

I got my Momitsu from Hong Kong Flix. That's where I got my Oppo 971 years ago. The player has worked out nicely. The Momitsu ought to play your DVD's just as well as your Oppo, I'd quesstimate.

Rachael, the big disc cat! I used to be looking for Hi-Vision Laserdiscs & D-Theater tapes, now I'm looking for HD-DVD's and Blu-rays.

I survived the AFI top 100 Film Challenge! I've seen them all.

I already had Zulu, which is phenomenal in Blu-ray, but I held off on Black Narcissus because Amazon.UK lists it as Region 2. Apparently, the movie is all-region, but the SD extras are region 2. so, I ordered it. Thanks.
