Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings

Surprised I didn't see a thread on this already.  I don't know if I'd call myself a HUGE Dream Theater fan (they're sort of up and down for me), but I'm really digging this new one so far.  Probably the most I've enjoyed a Dream Theater release since 'Scenes From A Memory'.  As of now I'm liking every track on the album (a rarity for me with Dream Theater).  I got the bonus 3 CD deal and haven't even listened to the two bonus discs yet because I've been so into the main disc.

How the hell did I miss this one coming out?  Huge DT fan and I missed it.  Pathetic.   Anyway, I just ordered the 3 CD SE.  Can't wait to get it!

If you're a huge fan, I think you will be very pleased.  It seems to take the best qualities of 'Images & Words', 'Awaken' & 'Scenes From a Memory', but still very new and fresh.  Two days later from my original post and I'm digging it even more now.

Count me as one very happy DT fan!

It's never wise to rank prog albums after only one listen but for whatever reason my first impression of DT albums usually ends up being my lasting impression.  That said, Black Clouds is right up there with the best DT albums post-Scenes from a Memory.  It certainly equals Six Degrees, IMO, and time will tell if it surpasses Octavarium as my favorite from the post SfaM time period.  It's much better than Systematic Chaos and light years better than the barely listenable Train of Thought.

I won't go into each song but Shattered Fortress is probably my favorite after one listen and I think that Wither is the best ballad they've done since The Spirit Carries On.

I haven't even got to the covers yet, but if they're good it's gravy.
