There are numerous TV ads offering to buy gold jewelry then melt it down. Do you have experience with any of these companies or a local company?
 

Do you have recommendations on buying gold coins or bullion for investment or numismatic purposes?

Two different things.   If you are looking for investment purposes try powershares ishares or other ETFs.   If you just want to hold it and touch it and squeeze it and call it George... expect to pay.    Most of the ads you see are scams with high comissions and mark-ups imho.
