Help Me Find a Decent Basic DVD Player

I know there have probably been a ton of these threads, but I ask your patience. My Sony DVP-NS50P has been faithfully playing my DVDs for about five years now, but recently it has begun freezing at certain points on some DVDs. I bought myself a Skip Doctor to clean these DVDs in the hopes that would fix the problem, but it hasn't. The Skip Doctor does a good job of cleaning the DVDs, but there are still spots where they freeze when playing them in my Sony.

I have spent countless hours scouring the Web researching DVD players, and so far people seem to recommend the Oppo DV-980H above all the others. Unfortunately, I do not own a HDTV nor do I plan on buying one anytime soon. Also, I don't think the DV-980H has the basic component outlets to play on my regular TV. Which leaves me with the dilemma in question: how can I find a decent basic DVD player?

The market is flooded with upconverters and Blu-ray players, but very few basic DVD players anymore. There is another Sony out there (DVP-SR200P/B), but some reviewers mention it has the same freezing problem mine already has. There's also a really nice Samsung DVD-1080P9 that I found, but again (like with the Oppo) I'm not sure if it has the regular digital outputs to play on my TV.

Any advice or suggestions you could give me would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Plain DVD players are so cheap these days that you can treat them as semi-recyclable.  For 480i output to a regular old TV, just find a cheap one with S-video output (if your TV has S-video), there won't be much difference from one to another.  They all will have at least composite video.  (Composite/s-video are "analog output", not "digital output").  You don't want to be paying Oppo prices since the advantage for those types of players are in the deinterlacing & scaling which won't be used with an old TV.

If it starts freezing, just return it during return period, or fix it during warranty period.  If it starts freezing after that, just get a new one, though hopefully by that time you have HDTV & are ready for Blu-ray.  If it works good for 2 months it should be good for 2 years at least, most electronics tend to fail either right away or after many years like your old player.

Stephen, thanks for your reply. So something like this Samsung DVD-P191 or this Sony DVP-NS710H would work with my TV? And if so which one would you recommend?

Any DVD player will work with your TV; I think it'll be many years before composite video is dropped.  I'd probably go with the Sony, I kind of prefer their user interface.  I'd go with the cheaper non-upconverting one, since I'd view this is as a short term purchase.
