BURBANK, CA (July 1, 2009) – The Pittsburgh Penguins are one of the great comeback sports stories of 2009.  Battling tremendous obstacles, the Penguins overcame the odds to bring home Lord Stanley’s Cup for the first time since 1992.  Now for the first time, Warner Home Video (WHV) and the National Hockey League (NHL) celebrate Pittsburgh hockey history with the release of the Pittsburgh Penguins 2009 Stanley Cup Champions DVD on July 7, 2009.  This commemorative DVD release takes Penguins fans inside the team’s third Stanley Cup Championship season with in-depth highlights and exclusive game footage featuring the sights and sounds of their memorable playoff run as well as exclusive interviews with players and coaches. The Pittsburgh Penguins 2009 Stanley Cup Champions will be available for $24.98 SRP.

The story of the Pittsburgh Penguins can be summed up in one word…perseverance.  After losing the 2008 Stanley Cup Final to the Detroit Red Wings, Penguins fans were looking for a quick start. Unfortunately this would not be the case as the team would stumble out of the gate and would eventually lead to the dismissal of coach Michel Therrien.  Owner Mario Lemieux decided to bring in rookie coach Dan Byslma and his fresh approach to lead his young Penguins squad.  He and General Manager Ray Shero then went out at the trade deadline to acquire veteran Stanley Cup winners, Craig Adams, Bill Guerin and Chris Kunitz to bolster his core young stars of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury and Jordan Staal.  These moves would prove critical to the team’s second half success and would eventually lead to them obtaining the #4 seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

The 2009 playoffs would prove to be the fresh start the Penguins were looking for, as they came out the gate and rolled over their in-state rivals the Philadelphia Flyers.  Next up would be the ultimate matchup between the league’s top two superstars, Crosby and the Washington Capital’s Alex Ovechkin.  Each played flawless hockey but in the end Crosby and Penguins would be victorious in seven games.  Their final conference test would come against the upstart Carolina Hurricanes who proved to be no match for the mighty Penguins as they swept them in four games.

The Penguins marched into the 2009 Stanley Cup Final filled with confidence but facing the tough task of trying to dethrone the defending champion Detroit Red Wings.  After watching the Red Wings celebrate the 2008 Stanley Cup Championship on their home ice a year ago, the Penguins were determined not to let history repeat itself.  Battling back from a 3-2 series deficit, the Penguins overcame their new archrivals and won Game 6 and Game 7 to bring home the Stanley Cup for the third time in franchise history.

“It has been a banner sports year for the city of Pittsburgh and WHV is honored to give the great fans of Pittsburgh a DVD commemorating their hometown hockey team’s unforgettable championship season,” said Don Polite, WHV Director, Sports & Fitness Marketing.  “The Pittsburgh Penguins 2008-2009 Stanley Cup Champions DVD will bring to life the story of 2008-2009 Penguins team and give their loyal fan base the opportunity to witness all the defining moments, incredible games and comeback stories from their historic title run.”

Great news Ron, but I must ask: Any talk of this coming on Blu-ray?

The Pittsburgh Steelers Superbowl XLIII release earlier this year was the first to be available on BD and I was hoping there would be one for the Pens too. If not, I guess I'll have to settle for a DVD.

Heinz,

Alas, I am only the messenger of these Press Releases.

Warner is reading this forum so I imagine they will take note of your request.

Thanks Ron, I appreciate your reply, and everything you do for the forum as well. I know you're just passing these announcements along to the rest of us, but I figured you had some 'connections' with the studios and are sometimes privy to information that you can't divulge right away. Just a shot the dark really.

Amazon had the Superbowl BD exclusively, at least for a time. I'll keep an eye out over there.
