Re: New and need help with Rogers 3250HD box/Samsung HLR6168
Is Rogers the name of your cable company or the manufacturer of the box? The model number sounds like a Scientific Atlanta/Cicso product.

OK, that's similar to my SA 8500 HD DVR. The box should have
two configuration menus. Been awhile since I went into the initial setup menu (which you can only access by powering the unit down and then holding down certain buttons on the box itself when you turn it on) but I think I remember the basics.
You can enable all the video modes so that the box can output any signal format it receives.
Once the unit is running normally, press the "settings" button twice to access th e preferences menu. Under "Set: Picture Format" select "Pass-Through". This will let your Samsung select the aspect ratio and eliminate the problem with your HD channels being letterboxed. You probably selected one of the "Upconvert" modes, which you really don't need. Your Samsung already upconverts all its inputs to its native resolution of 1080p and your set is anything like my JVC RP LCoS, the TV does a better job of this than the cable box will.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's how I set my TV up (and my cousin Laura's) to get everything to appear in the correct aspect ratio on the TV. At least one of the "upconvert" options was stretching the 16:9 material horizontally while simultaneously letterboxing it. Very strange. The main thing is to let the TV decide, which is what pass-through does.
