Amp: Optical Audio in, Stereo out

I have a relatively new Vizio HDTV that gives terrific audio through the built-in speakers. (Yes, I'm old, and my ability to discern high-quality audio is long gone.)

I'd like to connect a simple stereo amp to the TV for a bit more sound. Problem is, the only audio out from the TV is optical. Is there an inexpensive solution? A stereo amp with optical in, stereo speaker out? Or a little pre-amp with optical in, stereo out that I can feed into one of my existing stereo amps?

Thanks in advance for your gentleness with a naive noobie,

Re: Amp: Optical Audio in, Stereo out

What do you mean by "more sound"? If you are happy with the built-in speakers, then just don't get anything.

You need to define "more sound". Surround? Deeper bass? Louder output?
Also how much you want to spend, if there are space/mounting constraints for the speakers. You say you have existing amps; do you have existing speakers you wish to utilize, and if so how many of them and what type?

Pretty much all the amps you get today will have an optical in. What to get depends on what you are looking for; there are soundbars, "home theater in a box" systems covering a wide price range and going from 2.1 -> 7.1 channels, and receiver based systems. Tell us what you have, and what you want in the end.
