I am getting an Onkyo 607 and would like some suggestions on entry level speakers. Also would the speakers from my old Panansonic htib HT820v work with it. And any other particulars, like what guage wire. I have a Ps3 I am going to use with it and a 50 inch Vizio. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

onkyo 607 and advise on entry level speakers

I was wondering what entry level speakers would work well with the Onkyo 607.

Entry level means very different things to different people. We usually ask for a more firm budget to work with. This Energy Take Classic 5 Pack is very good for the price. Add a subwoofer and you'll have a nice system.

If those speakers have standard speaker wire connectors then they should work but those don't appear to be of very high quality. That 607 deserves better .

16 is the smallest I would ever use with 12 or 14 being what I use.

Re: Newbie getting Onkyo 607 advise of speakers

OK, what I meant to say was I was thinking of using four of the speakers from my old system (pan ht820v) for the the two speakers over the tv and two more in back, so it would be a 9.1 system when i figure out what 5.1 system you guys recommend for the Onkyo 607. My budget would be around $500 and I was thinking of going to Frys or Best Buy. Help me please.

Hey, what happened to my help

This should be interesting for you people. I have a budget of 1000.00 would like to purchase an Onkyo 607 and a set of 5.1 speakers. The Onkyo supports 9.2. Can I use my old Panasonic sc-ht820v speakers in this system along with the 5.1 speakers you guys recommend. If you need any stats for the speakers, no problem I still have the manual. I also would like to be able to play games (ps3) and listen to music (records). Please help....dont leave me hanging....

Really? The specs I found say 7.2 (actually 7.1, the 2 subs act as one).

Your old speakers should be retired. For a budget of $1000, I suggest you get the 507 instead and spend more on the speakers. 5.1 is still the standard, 7.1 exists but not mainstream, and 9.1 isn't really available yet. The new receivers that have Audyssey DSX and Dolby PLIIz are mostly 7.1. Another thing to remember is there is no true 9.1 (or even 7.1) soundtracts. They are all matrixed in some manner.

I think you're confused about the "A" and "B" mains. The receiver has two sets of front speaker terminals (so 9 pairs of binding posts on the rear of the unit), but only 1 pair is active at any given time.

Re: Newbie getting Onkyo 607 advise of speakers

No, I believe the original poster is correct. There are seven sets of binding posts, and then there are also a set of spring clip connections that are labeled for either front high speakers or zone 2 speakers. The specs don't specify the power to these, but if they are either for additional front high speakers, or zone 2, I would assume they provide power while all of the other 7 inputs are powered. They are definitely not for front A/B speakers. With that said, I definitely would not pay another $200 for a receiver just for PLIIz. I agree, it would definitely be better spent on better speakers. It looks like very limited sound is sent to the "front high" speakers, so the old speakers might be OK for that, but I don't think they would make good back speakers and would not integrate very well with a decent new 5.1 package.

Re: Newbie getting Onkyo 607 advise of speakers

For cost savings and to get the most bang for your buck you might want to follow this link. They are an authorized Onkyo dealer, which means they will honor the warranty (Onkyo won't touch non authorized dealers items) and the items are refurbished. You can purchase an extended warranty rather cheaply to add on to get you to three years.

Then I would put the rest into speakers. Do your homework and find either some on clearance (woot just had Klipsch), used on the hardware section of this forum, or Craigslist.
