What dvd player do you have and how is it hooked to your receiver? HDMI or analog? Since you mentioned that the music is HD it looks like you have a BluRay player, correct?
In any event, the first thing I'd do is turn off Audyssey in the setup menu and see if that improves things. Audyssey is great (or so I've heard) but if the directions aren't followed to the letter it can produce some less than stellar results. If things sound better with Audyssey off then try re-running it. A very quiet room (refer-w/d off, dog outside, kids and wife to the mall, etc.) and mic placement (tripod?) are critical. Also, when Audyssey is finished, make sure the speakers are set to small and the cross-over has been set correctly. 80hz is a good depending on the size of your speakers.

Audyssey is great........... I'd try running it again. Did you save the Audyssey settings, when it finished? If watching HD concerts on tv's HD channels, it may be the broadcaster's fault. It may also be the DSP mode you're using. I use the "Movie" DSP mode for everything. Your speakers may also be better for movies, than for music. What speakers do you have?
BTW........
Audyssey sets the speakers and sub where they need to be. I've found Audyssey to be pretty accurate. Onkyo doesn't have large and small setting for speakers. It sets Hz and/or kHz, and crossovers for the speakers instead (if I remember correctly). Gene is correct about placement of the mic.
I have the Onkyo 805, and it sounds great for everything, so I don't know what else to tell you. Good luck!

This is very true according to many comments over at AVS. The problems stem from the fact that the Audyssey "Dynamic" options assume that the source audio material was mixed at "reference" level. Only movies are mixed at a known, and common, reference level. All others including CDs and concerts are not mixed to any standard reference level. This causes Audyssey's Dynamic software to boost the level of bass and the surrounds if you are listening below reference level, which is very typical for nearly everything except movies (and most people watch movies below reference level, but higher than other audio recordings). There are many comments about this in the Audyssey thread on the AVS board. You may want to review people's comments and see how they are being guided to reduce the problem.

Even though they are broadcast in DD, concerts on tv don't always sound as good as those on dvd. My favorite concert dvd is Boz Skaggs Live and it sounds great in DD/DTS but when I saw it on HDNet it sounded pretty bad. If music sounds good in 5.1 from a dvd then the problem is most likely the broadcast and not the receiver.
