How to Finish Liberty Z-300 Cable?

Hi all,

Almost ten years ago, my installers laid some raw (uncapped) Liberty Interflax Z-300 OFC "Audio Interconnect" cable between rooms (in the walls) for future expansion. Well, I'm expanding.

This cable has red and white lines and a shared shield. I'm thinking it's a stereo audio cable and was planning on attaching two RCA plugs on each end.

My Stinger RCA plugs take a line and a shield, but this cable provides two lines and a single, shared, braided shield. Should I separate the shield into two separate strands and then attach one to each RCA jack? Or, should I ignore the shielding and just attach the lines to the RCA plugs?

Or, am I going about this all wrong by attaching RCA plugs? Are these intended for something else?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: How to Finish Liberty Z-300 Cable?

I found this in an old Audioholics forum archive:

Quote:
For unbalanced RCA connectors, connect the shield to ground (cold) at both ends of the connector. This gives a very low impedance ground path and a pretty effective shield.
For more info on this go here:

Based on that, I'd connect both of the wires to the positive (center pole) of the RCA plug. I'd connect the shield to the ring of the RCA plug.

Re: How to Finish Liberty Z-300 Cable?

Thank you, Robert, but if I understand you correctly, that would only provide a single channel of audio. I was looking to split out the white and red lines to separate RCA connectors for left and right channels, respectively, as suggested in the attached photo. Here, I stripped back the cable (and shielding) to expose three inches of the white and red lines. Now, I realize that the Stinger RCA plugs expect a line AND a shield. Not sure if I screwed up by cutting back the shield.

Without the shield you might as well be using speaker wire with RCA plugs solder to it. Do you have enough cable to cut some off and start over?

Yes, I have enough to start over.
