Sony STR-DG820 vs Onkyo TX-SR507

Hello everyone!

I just joined this forum and I already have a question

I am looking to replace my old Sherwood receiver and am looking at either the Sony STR-DG820 or the Onkyo TX-SR507.

It will be connected to a Panasonic plasma with HDMI input and I will be using it with an HDMI cable box, HDMI DVD, analog X-Box and analog VCR. I do not need to have any HDMI upconverting.

Wondering which of these two units would be the better one?

Thanks for any and all help!

Re: Sony STR-DG820 vs Onkyo TX-SR507

They both have similar features, although the Onkyo has Audyssey (this would be THE selling point for me). I think either one would be fine. Going strictly by reputation, the Onkyo will score higher. The lower end Sony's don't get much love.

Look around and you may find the Onkyo 576 or last year's 605 for close to the same price.

Yeah the Audessy sound setup is a selling point for me as well but I am a little conecerned with reports that the Onkyos have a high heat issue.

My receiver is in a built in unit beside the flat screen.

Re: Sony STR-DG820 vs Onkyo TX-SR507

Any modern AVR will generate heat and should not be enclosed. In fact, no modern electronic device should be enclosed. They all generate heat that and it will shorten their life.

Having said that, the heat issues were mainly on the 800+ models due to their up converting video circuitry.

Re: Sony STR-DG820 vs Onkyo TX-SR507

Sorry for the confusion, by enclosed I mean it is on a shelf in a bookcase that is built into the wall on either side of the TV.
It has a couple of inches of air space all around and is open to the room on the front.
I think I will go with the Onkyo.

Also forgot to mention I may have a lead on a Sony STR-DG910.
How would this be in comparison to the Onkyo 507?

Thanks!

Go with the newer Onkyo.

Re: Sony STR-DG820 vs Onkyo TX-SR507

Well I went with a TX-SR579. Sounds a lot better then the unit it replaced.

I have everything hooked up and went through the Audessey setup with no problems.

One question:

I see a lot of different sound options. What should I be trying to obtain for sound in regards to TV, DVD, radio etc?

Thanks for all the help so far
