Going on a road trip to NY and VT...and whatever else is worth it. Going looking for good xc singletrack mountain bike trails. 7 to 9 days. Camping and mountain biking. Know where I can ride? Where can I camp? I'm compiling a list of options on some of the mountian bike forums. Just thought I'd also check with the home theatre bunch and see if anybody had any idea's for me...

For NY, you might consider the Old Forge/Inlet area, Bike magazine did an article when I was a subscriber, lots of trails in and around the area from what I hear and read. It's in the Adirondacks and there are many DEC campgrounds there that you can camp and there's some short firetowers and hiking in the region. It's not right by the "high peaks" but there are still some non-biking activities in the area.
Great Glen offers mtn biking in the White Mtns I think, but I've never biked there...

I haven't left any state out yet. My trip is yet to be fully planned. I'm open to any and all suggestions. NY, VT, NH and MASS are just starting points. will consider all other eastern states.

I've biked down 73 from the ADK loj area through keene to Upper jay and then back towards lake Placid before. It's the ironman loop and is about 53 miles if you cut off lake Placid. The ironmen folks do two laps but it's a nice loop. I have hit 55mph coasting on my road bike down that stretch before.
at the bottom of 73 as you go into Keene, you'll hit a 35mph zone and yes, it's not hard to be coasting on a bike or a car well above that limit... :-)
if you are in Lake Placid and want a good brewpub, the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery is a good place to go. I'm not a big drinker but friends who are like the place.
I can tell you that there is mtn biking at Mt Van Hoevenberg which is now called the "verizon sports something-or-other" but it's where the bobsled run is, however, most of it is groomed mtn biking not not free. So if you're looking for serious technical stuff that is free, not your place.

Yeah, I'm looking for cross-country singletrack and some mountain sort of riding. Not necessarily downhill runs on a ski resort, but singletrack within the mountains. Mostly hardcore xc singletrack mountain biking. I wasn't planning to take my cyclo-cross bike with me, although I could use that as a nice road ride bike, but it would complicate things as I'd have to cram it into my car when mtb'in and vice versa with the mtb in the car when on the road with the cyclo-cross bike.
So mostly looking for public mtb trails and places to camp. I'm putting together a fairly good selection of options so far with NY, PA, VT and MN etc. Open to any and all suggestions for free xc mtb single track trails and places to camp.

OK, if you were looking at downhill stuff, Whiteface Mtn in Wilmington offers MTB in the summer times, gondala assist. So does Plattekill mtn in the Catskills (Roxbury, NY to be precise) as well as I think Hunter Mtn and Windham ski areas do now.

I may try some downhill like you describe, but it won't be my main focus.
