Setting up HTIB

I just purchased the YHT -391 HTIB and I have a PS3 and a Panasonic Viera Plasma. What is the best way of setting this system up. I've heard two schools of thought.

1. Hooking the Cable and PS3 into the TV's HDMI inputs and then connecting an optical cord to the receiver.

2. Connecting the Cable and PS3 into the receiver with HDMI and then running the HDMI out to the TV.

Where am I going to get a better quality of sound? Does it even make a difference?

Re: Setting up HTIB

(1) works, as long as you are connecting optical cables directly from your cable box + PS3 to the receiver. (*Not* the optical from the TV, which typically gives surround sound only from the TV's tuner, e.g. hooking bare cable straight to the TV instead of going through a cable box. It won't relay 5.1 from the HDMI inputs)

(2) is normally preferred but doesn't work on yours because of the level of receiver/HTiB you bought, the cheapest ones don't process audio over HDMI, which is a bit lame IMO, defeating the main advantage of HDMI. (It'll work for the video portion of it, but you still have to run the optical cables for the video like option 1, it does save you from switching inputs on the TV.)

In order to get the lossless sound from the PS3, I think you have to get at least the Yamaha 591 model to use option (2), if sticking with the Yamaha line.

Option 2 is equal quality for cable, theoretically better for PS3 Blu-ray as you get lossless from the discs that have it. But remember lossless vs. lossy is pretty tiny difference to begin with, it is basically like comparing CD audio to a highish bit rate MP3.

Re: Setting up HTIB

Thank you for your feedback. I guess i purchased it with the understanding that i would get audio from the receiver because i thought it would produce the audio. Looks like setting up will be quite interesting tonight.

Would Yahama ever produce a fireware to make audio work through HDMI?

That's definitely a hardware thing. No firmware is going to give the ability to decode HD audio formats.

Re: Setting up HTIB

I see, thank you for the feedback. I kind of figured that. For a starter system I have found a way to connect it all and get what I am looking for. My next move in the long run would be to have an entire new system within the next 5 years. Should I being with new speakers or a new receiver?
