iPhone 3.0 Discussion

Now that I've been able to play around with the 3.0 firmware update on my iPhone 3G for a week, here is what I consider the pros and cons:

What I like:

•Spotlight search is great
•The variable speed scrubbing in iPod video is awesome...even its implementation. No more skipping ahead ten seconds because of a lack of fine control.
•Ability to "queue" multiple SMS messages even when offline. A little red exclamation mark appears next to the messages that weren't sent. When you come back online, just tap the exclamation mark to send them.
•Application launch definitely feels more snappy
•Copy and paste...it's great.
•Camera seems MUCH better. Looks like they increased the shutter speed, which means far better quality if your hand accidentally moves during the shot
•Find My iPhone...just an awesome implementation. The phone will actually ping (it sounds like a submarine) and vibrate even if you have it muted!
•No apparent negative hit to battery life.
•Ability to subscribe to published calendars
•Call log now shows which phone a user called from based on Address Book data...home, work, mobile, etc. Also, a little outbound call icon appears so you know which were calls you placed.

What I don't like:

•Still no unified Inbox in Mail
•Still no option to skip messages over a certain size. What I'd really like is the option to receive just the first few kilobytes of an e-mail message. Would really make things easier with a slow network connection and could prevent huge international roaming charges.
•Not a true Spotlight search. Can't search on text in an e-mail message...just to/from or subject. Can't search SMS messages.
•Still quite a few third party apps crash under 3.0. Hopefully forthcoming updates soon.
•Force quitting now sucks. You no longer just hold the Home button down for several seconds to force quit an app. First you have to hold down the screen lock button until the power off slider pops up, THEN you hold the Home button down for several seconds to finish the process
•Copying doesn't work on most web pages I've tried
•Fine tuned copying doesn't work in SMS messages that have already been sent. You have to copy the entire message instead of getting the option to select portions of text.

I read over at Macrumors that 10 AM PDT is the expected release. No idea if they're right as it was just in the comments.

I'm going to have to use my superhuman patience not to upgrade my original iPhone as I am getting a 3G S (have one reserved for Friday) and want to be able to unlock the old one for travel purposes.

It would be much, much nicer if AT&T/Apple provided official unlocking for out of contract iPhones. I've heard that AT&T will unlock on request other brand phones at the end of the contract. I somehow doubt they'll do it for iPhones though -- but it would be a very low hanging fruit in terms of government regulation.

Hmm...you bring up an interesting point. I also have one on reserve for Friday, but I was planning to go ahead and upgrade my original phone in the meantime. I may need to rethink that.

I decided to go ahead and update. Now I need to figure out why one of my e-mail accounts always crashes Mail.

Actually, mail is crashing no matter which account I'm checking. Browsing through the Apple discussion forums, it appears that there are others having the same problem. Some have fixed it some have not. I have not.

i used the info on this site.

Not really sure what tethering is other then using the iphone to conect to the internet.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Discussion

Looks like the reason for getting rid of the one step force quit action is because they've reserved that gesture for invoking voice control on the 3GS.

And for people who travel a lot and don't want to pay the internet access fees at hotels they stay at, and don't want to spend a lot of time looking for free wifi spots around cities they are unfamiliar with.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Discussion

Eh...given how piss poor AT&T's 3G network is anyhow, I wouldn't expect decent tethering speeds like you get from Sprint and Verizon.

John Gruber reviewed the Tethering App that was in the iTunes Store for a day or two last summer before it got taken down, and he was quite happy with the speeds -- said they beat what you could get out of many a hotel WiFi.

As with everything else it depends where you are.

Force Quit Unresponsive Apps

Because of multiple functionalities for the Home button, this key will no longer force quit unresponsive apps like it did in 2.X software. To force quit an application in 3.0, you have to hold the sleep/wake button at the top until the red power off slider appears. Then you have to hold down the home button to quit the unresponsive application.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Discussion

Well, now that I've gotten Mail to work again, I'm enjoying 3.0. It is nice that it is now so easy to change the speed of audio books, but I do wish that there was a separate setting for podcasts. I almost always listen to audio books at a faster speed, but I want to listen to most podcasts at normal speed.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Discussion

Yeah...I'd mentioned the new force quitting gesture in the first post. Definitely don't like that the old one has been given up to the 3GS for voice dialing.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Discussion

How often do you need to hard quit something? I've NEVER done it. And I expect to use voice dial multiple times per day starting tomorrow. Seems smart to me.

Ha! Spoken like someone that has never used an iPhone. Once you are on AT&T's network and go to check your e-mail and see it saying CONNECTING while the status wheel spins and spins and spins and spins and... Then you'll realize why you have to force quit an iPhone app. Or you could just wait for it to drain your battery while it never retrieves your mail.

I've never force quit the Mail App. (I have certainly force quit plenty of third party apps). I think you worry too much Granted, I never upgraded to the 3G model, so maybe I never had any battery issues because the original iPhone's battery lasted much longer.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Discussion

Dave,

Since you were looking at the Palm Pre and iPhone you may be
interested in this report. I don't have a direct link to the article
as it was sent to me in email, however I have seen this information
posted on other sites.

Quote:
Mobile Analytics and advertising company Medialet recently did a benchmarking test to compare the web browsing speeds of the iPhone 3G S, iPhone 3G, T-Mobile Android G1, and the Palm Pre. All of these devices browsers’ use Webkit (an open source web browser) and Webkit has a Javascript test suite dubbed as SunSpider. It made sense for Medialets to run the Sunspider test suite to test the javascript speed of all these devices.

iPhone 3G S vs iPhone 3G vs G1: The Results

iPhone 3GS running on iPhone OS 3.0 performed better than all the other devices (no surprise there)! A 2GHz Core 2 Duo WhiteMacbook running OS X 10.5.7 was tested as a baseline and it completed the test in 1.36 seconds. The iPhone 3G S completed the test suite in 16.5 seconds. The iPhone 3G on iPhone OS 3.0 was just as fast as the Palm Pre webOS browser, both completed the test in 48 seconds. The T-Mobile Android G1 completed the test in 91.1 seconds. The iPhone 3G running on iPhone OS 2.2.1 was the slowest and it completed the test in 132 seconds. As you can see iPhone OS 3.0 made a huge difference on the iPhone 3G. If you’re an iPhone user and you haven’t updated already, then update now! You can see a graph of the test below.
