Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question
Hello, fellow Maverick fans!
To answer the original question, I too am at a loss as to why they would skip that Bret Maverick. Have they run all the other episodes and started again? Sometimes a pre-emption will result in a skipped episode, but if they have skipped it twice, it's a mystery.
With Columbia House, I do think I know that one. I bought a number of their releases, and unless it was finishing up a series, they always released them in groups of five or ten tapes at a time. The Maverick set reached 25 tapes and the other two Garner shows would have required a 26th. I agree that they should have gone ahead and done it, but since it was far from the end of the series, that just didn't seem to be their policy.
Have you read Ed Robertson's book on Maverick? He lists five unproduced scripts for Bret Maverick. Two of them were just early versions of episodes that actually were produced. the other three may be floating around. If you haven't read the book, I can give you the titles and authors of the scripts.
Jack Kelly used to say that when he arrived to do his cameo, he was handed a pile of scripts for the following season, all featuring him, and then learned the show had been canceled. I am sure Kelly was invited to be a regular, but the "pile of scripts" must have been hyperbole. The unproduced scripts were all written for the first season, and by the time second year scripts would have been commissioned, the show had already been canceled.
