Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

One of the westerns I have been following on Encore Westerns Channel is Bret Maverick. According to my episode list, Episode Number 3 is "Welcome to Sweetwater", with an original air date of 12/8/81. However, this episode has been the only Bret Maverick episode not aired on Encore Westerns. Does anyone know why this particular episode is never aired on Encore?

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

Not getting that channel on my cable system currently, BUT being an avid fan of all things Maverick, I can't imagine any reason why they would skip this episode. Certainly nothing controversial was contained in the episode.

But now I am gonna have to get my tape out of that episode and watch it.

If I can figure out any reason that it wouldn't currently be shown, I will post again in a day or so.

Now I have a question about that channel: Have they ever rerun the other Maverick based series YOUNG MAVERICK?

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

Okay, I just finished watching the "Welcome to Sweetwater" episode of BRET MAVERICK.

I see nothing of content that would explain why the channel is not showing this particular episode.

It is a standard railroad con, Bret realizes it and tries to turn the con into a way to make some money for himself.

As to why it hasn't been shown, no idea.

Does anyone know of any websites devoted to Maverick or the old WB westerns in general? Would like to chat with some fans of this material.

Dear BretMaverick2:

Wow! Someone else that remembers the Young Maverick series with Charles Frank. I've been trying to track down the six or seven episodes of that series for years. Susan Blanchard was great in that show. Hope you get all the episodes.

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

I am such a huge MAVERICIK fan!

My poor wife politely tolerates my watching and re-watching the Columbia House VHS tapes I bought several years ago. (Odd aside: Columbia released only episodes with Garner in them, but did not include only two episodes, which I thought odd. Why issue all but two of the episodes? It would have then completed Garner's whole run with the show!)

I still have my original tapes of BRET MAVERICK from it's original airing. They are starting to look a bit worn. I may have to transfer em to disc eventually.

I bought the DVD release of THE NEW MAVERICK earlier this year and have really enjoyed it.

As for YOUNG MAVERICK, years ago I bought four episodes from a gentleman via mail. They are great quality, but again are showing wear. Would love to see them issued as well. Another aside: evidently there were three or four additional episodes shot that were never aired. It would be nice to see these included in a boxed set of the series. Garner actually appears at the very beginning of episode one.

Supposedly before NBC cancelle BRET MAVERICK, there were a few scripts written for the next season. I have written numerous letters to try and track copies of these but have never been successful.

I have only become familiar with Encore Westerns recently and that was because I saw a commercial for the Gene Autry Show running on it. At any rate, I do not recall seeing Young Maverick mentioned as one of the shows running on Encore Westerns recently.

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

Hello, fellow Maverick fans!

To answer the original question, I too am at a loss as to why they would skip that Bret Maverick. Have they run all the other episodes and started again? Sometimes a pre-emption will result in a skipped episode, but if they have skipped it twice, it's a mystery.

With Columbia House, I do think I know that one. I bought a number of their releases, and unless it was finishing up a series, they always released them in groups of five or ten tapes at a time. The Maverick set reached 25 tapes and the other two Garner shows would have required a 26th. I agree that they should have gone ahead and done it, but since it was far from the end of the series, that just didn't seem to be their policy.

Have you read Ed Robertson's book on Maverick? He lists five unproduced scripts for Bret Maverick. Two of them were just early versions of episodes that actually were produced. the other three may be floating around. If you haven't read the book, I can give you the titles and authors of the scripts.

Jack Kelly used to say that when he arrived to do his cameo, he was handed a pile of scripts for the following season, all featuring him, and then learned the show had been canceled. I am sure Kelly was invited to be a regular, but the "pile of scripts" must have been hyperbole. The unproduced scripts were all written for the first season, and by the time second year scripts would have been commissioned, the show had already been canceled.

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

FanCollector, that would be great information to have!!

I naively live with the wish that someday I will come across copies of said scripts somewhere. Silly, I know, but...

My email address is chuckamock@hotmail.com for anyone that would like to send me any Maverick related information.

My local cable shows Encore Western on Wednesdays as part of the Movieplex channel, I have begun watching Cheyenne in hopes that I would catch the episode that had Samantha Crawford.

Sheriff Who? by Geoffrey Fischer

The Sensibaugh Gang by Del Reisman

Our Man in Sweetwater by Marion Hargrove

According to the book's interview with Hargrove, the cancellation announcement came while he was writing the latter.

Let me know if you find any of them!

Encore Westerns has been through the Bret Maverick series at least twice now and they have not aired the episode, "Welcome to Sweetwater". I have seen a total of 17 episodes of Bret Maverick (and that is counting the opening two part episode, "The Lazy Ace", as two episodes). That makes a total of 18 episodes for the Bret Maverick series. Is that the correct number of episodes?

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

Yes, 18 episodes (counting the pilot as two) is correct. They must be skipping Sweetwater for a reason. Before I go rewatch it, Bret2, was there any special music or performance in it that might have cost a lot to license again?

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

Not at all.

When I watched it last night, I was looking for just that kind of thing, but there is nothing apparent for why the episode isn't shown.

I guess is could be possible that there was not a decent copy of the episode in possession that was worthy of airing??

Beyond that, I can't see any reason that would keep it from airing.

Does anyone know if there is an email address for Encore Western to which an inquiry could be sent???

On another note, of all the BRET MAVERICK episodes, I think my least favorite was Seven Swords... Not that I didn't enjoy it, it just was my least favorite of the 17 (counting "The Lazy Ace" as a single episode).

Episode "Hallie" - Did anyone else that watched that episode get the feeling it could have been titled "Samantha" and featured the return of the character of Samantha Crawford? Sadly the actress that portrayed her had passed by the time the series had begun.

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

Dear BretMaverick2:

Are any of the Young Maverick episodes you have the one where Ben and Nelly played a sting with some sort of "bride" con game, and Nelly pretended to be a bride to try to entrap guys.

Something like that. If you have that in your collection could you let me know?

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

That episode doesn't sound familiar to me at all.

Of YOUNG MAVERICK, I have the pilot episode and three others who's names escape me at the moment.

These tapes are so old at this point I hate to even put em in the player.

I am thinking of buying a deck that will let me copy my tapes to DVD.

Any more MAVERICK related questions or information can be sent to me via my home email, chuckamock@hotmail.com.

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

Thought I posted this response but now I don't see it, SO - - - -

The episode you reference of YOUNG MAVERICK doesn't sound familiar at all, so I doubt that I have it.

The episodes that I have are the pilot episode with the Garner cameo and three others, the titles of which I don't recall at the moment.

The quality on these are pretty decent but the tapes are pretty old and I am about half afraid to play em in the VCR for fear the will start to flake off. I am looking into getting a deck that allows me to transfer VHS tapes on to DVD so I can watch these episodes at will.

WOuld be glad to carry on any Maverick discussions via my home email as well as here. Home email is chuckamock@hotmail.com.

I have emailed Starz Encore Westerns about the Sweetwater episode briefly explaining the situation. They state on the website that they do not respond to emails, but they do take the to time read all the emails they receive. So, I don't expect to get any answers, but at least they should be aware of the issue.

I dropped a "snail mail" to Encore this morning on my way home from work so we will see if I ever get a response.

If so I will post it here on the board.

Just watched "Welcome to Sweetwater" again myself. It's not particularly good, but I can't imagine Encore is making an artistic judgment about it. I couldn't see any reason for omitting it either.

Thanks Thomas, for checking on this episode. I was beginning to wonder if this episode really existed or my episode list was in error. I have the address for Starz and I think I will also snail mail them. That may be the only hope for a response. If I get a response, I will post it here.

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

Just a trivial aside:

On the original series, I believe there were the following Mavericks:

Bret, Bart, cousin Beau, brother Brent, Pappy (Beauregard) and Pappy's brother Bentley. In the episode "The Maverick Line" the boys refer to their uncle Mike Maverick.

Then for the spinoff they introduced Ben as the son of Beau (and I just sorta assumed that Beau is the son of Bentley, but perhaps Mike?).

Uncle Bentley was played by Jack Kelly, with Pappy being played by James Garner.

I always forget that Brent was actually another brother. My memory always makes him a cousin, even though I think you're right.

Re: Bret Maverick On Encore Westerns Channel Question

Thanks for the information!!

I am currently trying to find out how much it is gonna cost me through Insight Comm (my local cable co.) to upgrade in order to get that channel added. We currently get a preview of sorts every Wednesday as their MoviePlex channel is "western wednesday", which is simply the Wednesday programming for Encore Westerns. So each Wednesday, if I am off work, I get three Maverick episodes and an episode of Cheyenne.

I looked at the Encore Westerns website today and Episode 2, "Welcome to Sweetwater", is missing from the schedule. I guess this means that this particular episode is going to be skipped again. I wrote them a letter a month ago about this, and still no reply.
