Which one for my system Onkyo 706 or 806?

OK guys, I am a new member and have been an audiophile for too many years. However, I am at a crossroad. I am looking into getting a new receiver but don't know which one will do what I need it to do. I like Onkyo products and have owned Onkyo for many years. Currently I am using the Onkyo TX-SR 800, but I recently made the move to Blu-ray and want to upgrade to utilize all the new sound categories that have come out. Right now it's between the 706 or the 806. I am going to list my system below but can you guys help as to which will help me power my system and make it work the way it's supposed to work. Thanks for your help and keep the good info coming.

TV: Sharp 46D65U
Blu-ray player: Oppo BDP-83
Speakers: Boston Acoustics-- front- Ur970 Towers
center- VR12
rear- VR-MX

Re: Which one for my system Onkyo 706 or 806?

806 is like one more HDMI input & a tiny bit more power for $200, I don't think it's worth it. 706 is fine IMO.

But why bother upgrading receiver at all? Can't you just use the multi-ch analog output from the Oppo to get the new Blu-ray codecs? That's what I'd do.

Re: Which one for my system Onkyo 706 or 806?

I did that with my Onkyo DVD player, but once I got the Oppo, I went HDMI into the TV and optical into the receiver. Now all I get as far as reading from the receiver is either PCM or in the case of watching Blu-ray movies DTS Neo 6. The sound is good but its just not 100%. I would like to get the DDP, Dol TruHD, DTS-HD, etc. to come through. Let me know what your thoughts are and thanks for getting back to me

To get the new lossless audio w/o an HDMI AVR, you cannot use a digital audio connection to your AVR. It MUST be a 7.1 or 5.1 ANALOG out connection. If both your BD player & your AVR do NOT have the analog out connections you cannot do it & will then need to upgrade your AVR if you wish to have the new lossless audio.

You are fine going HDMI for VIDEO from your BD player to your HDTV.

Note: If you do the analog audio connection you will need to Manually set up your speakers for use with the BD player. Volume, distance, ms delay.
You will also be very limited re bass management from your AVR. But, you will get the awesome new lossless audio.

Re: Which one for my system Onkyo 706 or 806?

You definitely want to use the 7.1 analog outs on the Oppo to the "multi-ch" in on the receiver. You'll have to do the "audio processing setup" on the Oppo. On the Onkyo, you'll have to enable the multi-ch input under setup, and when you have DVD selected, use the "audio sel" button to switch to multi-ch in.

Even with the optical, something is wrong, you have to set the Oppo optical out to "bitstream" rather than "LPCM". This would give you regular DD/DTS. Irrelevant though once you switch to multich analog.

Re: Which one for my system Onkyo 706 or 806?

Stephen thanks for the heads up on the Oppo. I changed the optical to bitstream and as you stated it is now playing DTS. Definately my next move is to hook it up to 7.1. Need to look in my box of plugs and get all my Monster cables ready. Only thing is I think I'm a couple short. Oh, well need to make another trip to the store. Just need to leave the CC at home cause you know I will walk out of there with something else I don't need like another sub...LOL Thanks again for your help. Weather you know it or not you just saved me about 600 cause now I learned more about my receiver I have and the TX-SR800 ain't all that bad. I'll buy a new one eventually but just not now
