The Judy Garland Show Re-release

I saw on TVShowsonDVD.com that this show is being re-released by Infinity/Falcon. I have the original releases from Pioneer. If you like Judy Garland, you want to get these episodes. Garland is at the peak of her career, looking good most of the timde and in lovely voice. She sings songs not normally assosciated with her career, which give fans new material to immerse in while marvelling at the Garland talent.

This show is also a great time capsule of the old Variety show format that no longer exists on television today. There are some great guests, including Barbra Streisand, Count Basie, Mickey Rooney, Vic Damone, Ethel Merman, Ray Bolger... a virtual who's who of mid-twentieth century entertainment. This is only a sampling of the performers who wanted to be on this series from 1963-64.

If you like classic television, and missed this one the first time around, grab it. You will enjoy the ride-

Re: The Judy Garland Show Re-release

I wish they'd have done just a Complete Series set, but I assume the music rights would be extravagant to say the least! I am told there are a few episodes that are practically straight "concert" performances all the way through...that's a LOT of songs!

Re: The Judy Garland Show Re-release

Pioneer released every episode in two boxes...so that was the complete season set...hopefully this new edition will be too?

Re: The Judy Garland Show Re-release

I'm surprised that anyone is taking this on-- The music clearance fees would truly be horrendous... not to mention the countless hours someone would have to spend just to do the negotiations with the publishers!

Re: The Judy Garland Show Re-release

The Pioneer releases were among my earliest "must have" discs when I became addicted to DVD. I never dreamed I'd own the entire series, much less all of the outtake material that was included in the releases.

For a fan of the star, this is absolutely invaluable.

Re: The Judy Garland Show Re-release

Why, it's Kevin Segura- long time no see! Any new projects? What TV classic are you restoring now?

Regarding JGS- it's double-dipping here, the previous release was excellent, and since a) I already have all the previous DVDs by Pioneer, and b) there's nothing new offered, I'll skip it.
Bring "The continuing story of PEYTON PLACE" home on DVD: the one that started it all- from Dallas and Dynasty to Desperate Housewives and Gossip Girl!!! Starting this May, see the legendary saga starring Mia Farrow, Ryan O'Neal, Barbara Parkins, and Oscar-winner Dorothy Malone on DVD thru Shout!...

Unless someone spent a lot (and I mean a **lot**) of money upfront, or the estate was able to make incredible deals with all of the publishers, the music clearances would have only been for a given length of time (usually 3-5 years).

So generally, a re-release like this would require all of the clearances to be re-negotiated.

How much more would it cost to license the music for all home video formats in perpetuity than a temporary license?

I am curious if any outtakes previously not included in the original (and absolutely essential) Pioneer releases will be included in the infinity releases.

I was missing some of the Pioneer releases because I didn't want to end up buying repeating episodes, now I guess I can't. I hope they would keep the stuff from the old discs or I will be mighty ticked off.

I'm just now getting into this series and am looking at purchasing the old Pioneer releases.  Can somebody tell me how many volumes were released or just put out a list of each volume for me.  When I go to Amazon or half.com, they have volume releases listed and then just releases which leave me confused as I don't want to order multiple releases.  Any help would be appreciated, even if you just point me to a great website that shows me everything.

As far as I know, www.thejudyroom.com is reliable.

If you click on all the covers pictured here, it tells you the date the DVD was released and what's on the set:

This review implies that the Count Basie episode runs 43 minutes. God I hope not.

Yet it says the Minnelli episode is 56 minutes.

I went through these shows years ago, following along with the very good paperback book (whose title escapes me) about the making of the series.

If I remember correctly, the shows on DVD aren't the finished product as originally shown on CBS, but more or less the original master tapes.  Some shows as finally broadcast were padded out with cut footage from other shows; therefore, each show on the DVD has a different running time!

I would have preferred this show to be released in its entirety in one set, each episode as shown originally on CBS, in chronological order as shown (not as made), with the cut stuff included as bonuses.  As it stands now, it's something of a mess, but the paperback book I mentioned makes sense of it all, if you can track it down.

The name of that book is Rainbow's End: The Judy Garland Show and it was written by Coyne Steven Sanders. It is one of the best chronologies of the making of a television season ever written.

Yes, thanks for the title.

I highly recommend reading the appropriate chapter in that book before watching each episode.  It clarifies what was originally taped for each show, what was cut, etc.  And it makes it all so much more interesting to watch, for example, reading about the trouble Judy had with June Allyson and then watching the show and the outtakes.
