Layout for 5.1 System in open floor plan

Hi all,

I'm attempting to put together a 5.1 system used predominantly for watching movies. I'd also use it on occasion for music on my first floor. My condo is an open floor plan. I'd like to get some feedback on my proposed speaker placement. I made up a diagram to show the layout. I've some layouts where the sub is between the TV and front speaker where as in my design it'd sit to outside. Not sure if that makes a huge difference.

The open area extends to the kitchen/dining area. All Hardwood floors. I'm still in the midst of trying to figure out how the heck I'm going to hide the rear speaker wiring. Before I ask any of those questions, I'm trying to read previous posts that address similar topics.

The diagram is located at: http://web.mac.com/firestone79/iweb/tvroom.png

I can post photos as well if it helps.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Greg

If you'll be sitting on the couch when watching movies, your diagram shows your best choice. But I would move the right surround back more, if possible. My second choice would be to put the surrounds on the ceiling pointing down toward couch.

I'd also spread the L/R speakers out a bit, if possible.

While there's optimal places to put the sub, in general, you can put it just about anywhere it'll fit/look right in a living room.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the feedback. If I use speaker stands, I can spread the front speakers out a little bit more. I can probably move the RR back a little further. I think I might consider sticking the sub behind the TV. it will be out of side, but since it will be in a corner, I would think the sound would bounce back towards the couch.

Actually subwoofers are omni directional and create low enough frequencies that they don't reverberate much if at all in a home setting. The corner placement is actually the best option most times as butting a sub up against a wall can boost it's output my several dB. Unless its placed over a bass trap, which you would have to just test out to know.
