Importance of physical arrangement in 5.1 Home Theatre System???

Hi all,

I am struck with a confusion with my Philips 5.1 Home Theatre System.
Actually, my system is a very basic one (got free with a Compaq laptop), so I am not very much keen on getting its setup done, thereby putting wires in my room. Rather, I have placed all satellites & woofer together in the order of RL, FL, Center, Woofer, FR, RR and now I am getting a good bass experience but bad vocal experience.

Do you think, vocal experience ll improve extensively if I place the satellites properly.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks....
:-)

Of course it will improve if they're placed properly. Why aren't they placed properly? Also, all the speaker's decibel levels needs to be set the same. Does your system allow this?

There is no point in using a surround sound system if the sound doesn't surround you. In fact, if the speakers don't surroung you, you aren't using a surround system - you just have a bunch of speakers.

What are you using the system for? Movies? Music? (Stereo or true multichannel?) TV?

If you're listening to stereo music on CD or MP3, there is no reason to use the satellite speakers or the center channel at all.. LF, RF and subwoofer are all you need. For movies or multichannel music you need the center and the surrounds (properly placed) because they provide the ambience - for movies that means background noise, direction sound effects and the like, for music the placement of the instruments in the recording studio or the sound of the hall and the audience for a concert. They don't carry the main sound, nor are they intended to under normal conditions. (Most receivers have modes for "5-Channel Stereo" or something similar, which simply sends tha basic stereo signal to more speakers. I've never liked it much, myself.)

What model Phillips are we talking about? Is is a true "home theater" (which usually means, at a minimum, a receiver and 6 speakers) or just a PC-based surround system? (Subwoofer connected to PC, then the rest of the speakers connected to the sub, which contains the amplifier?)
