Re: Problem with transmitting sound via PS3

You got the wrong receiver. Denon 1709 is one of those lame "pass-through" receivers that don't process audio over HDMI. You have to connect the optical to get sound. Or get a different receiver if you can still return, try to get a 2009 model, this year's models from Denon/Onkyo/Yamaha all get HDMI-audio processing capabilities on lower priced models, with more HDMI inputs, compared to 2008 models.

Re: Problem with transmitting sound via PS3

I know the PS3 has alot of settings in there for Audio, you would assume it would automaticaly do right but I know I had to "Tinker"when I first got it,perhaps you just need to play around in the settings?
Does your Reciever have a Menu of some sort where you need to tell it what it needs the Audio sent to?

Well, whatever, it was released last year, a lot of manufacturers are like car manufacturers and always are naming their products as belonging to next year. Regardless, what I say is correct, the 1709 doesn't do audio over HDMI, you need to connect optical also. For HDMI w/ audio, you'd need a higher model xx09 model, or a recently released xx10 model like the 1610, or the roughly equivalent 590. Or an Onkyo (507+, *07 are latest), or Yamaha (465+, *65 are the latest).

Re: Problem with transmitting sound via PS3

Stephen Tu thank you very much!
you were unfortunately right, that crappy Denon 1700 really does not support sound over HDMI

but how did you know that?
i mean when i bought it (less than a year ago) i saw 4 HDMI's i was sure!!! it would support audio as well as video...

IAN Stephen, but I'll hazard a guess - he's researched that particular receiver or the Denon line before. Or he's seen someone else around here post the information. Questions like this come up a lot on the HTF. Often a member will be trying to connect two or three components I'm familiar with and one I'm not. For that reason I now have a small library of PDF User's Guides for various makes and models, all downloaded from the manufacturers' web sites. In fact, when shopping for new stuff myself I generally download the manuals for the components I'm considering (as well as checking reviews) so that I can really see what the features are and what my connection options will be, rather than rely on often ill-informed sales associates. Something to keep in mind for the future.

Regards,

Joe

P.S.

Don't overpay for that optical cable by going to a local brick'n'mortar. Wait a few days and buy from www.bluejeanscable.com, www.monoprice.com or any other cable seller who advertises on the HTF.
