Advice on set up needed please

I have the following kit and I'm wondering how best to set it up:

- Sony Bravia LCD tv with HDMI cable but no inbuilt digital tv tuner
- Panasonic DVH hard disc recorder
- Foxtel Digital (not iQ)
- Digital TV tuner (set top box)
- JBL speaker system (uses a headphone socket to plug into the likes of an ipod)

I have wireless broadband which is connected via the Foxtel cable connection.

What I was thinking of getting was one of the 1Tb media players (possibly a wireless one) so that I can store music, videos, photos etc. I'm not sure whether I can connect directly to my wireless broadband router (using an ethernet cable) in order that it becomes part of a wireless network. Would that work?

Also not sure how best to connect the media player to my other existing devices, including the speakers to get the best set-up/output.

Any advice to a novice is sought and would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Advice on set up needed please

Depends entirely on the media player you choose. I think I've seen a few of the new ones that are wireless. But some of the more popular models like the Popcorn Hour Media Tank are wired. If you want it wireless you can use a wireless access point.

As far as how to connect it again depends entirely on what connections the media player has. The PHMT has everything including HDMI. You don't list what your JBL has as far as connections so we are left guessing.

The JBL speakers connection is a headphone single jack socket (that would plug into an ipod)

Re: Advice on set up needed please

I think the Popcorn Hour has optical and coaxial digital for full surround sound as well as RCA's for stereo output. The Western Digital media player has digital out as well but I'm not sure what kind. Doesn't your JBL have more than a 'headphone single jack socket'? By the way, that is called a 1/8" stereo jack.

Are you going to leave me guessing as to what other connections it has? Links to the equipment in question will help.

Re: Advice on set up needed please

It sounds to me like he's got some kind of speaker system precisely designed to work with an iPod, personal CD player or other portable sound source, and not anything intended for (or capable of) working in a home theater. JVC seems to make several systems of the sort, and used to make more. If I'm right, there probably isn't a whole lot we'll be able to suggest apart from, "First, buy a receiver".
