Question about stereo

My setup is yahama yht 150 on ps3. I have front L+R, center and sub. No surround because it is in my room which is small. When I put the settings on the receiver on 5ch stereo I get sound from all speakers. When I put just stereo it is all except center. Both modes sound good but 5ch sounds better I think. Will I have any missing sounds with that setup on 5ch? Like does it try to send sounds to 5 speakers? Or would this be fine with my setup or the 3? Just dont want to lose any sound quality and trying to get the best setup. The other presets make gunshots etc sound bad.

Would I notice a difference with digital audio cables and a better cable for the sub? Atm its all regular rca. Huge improvement over my stock vizio speakers though!

Thanks guys.

Re: Question about stereo

If you're not using a digital cable (optical or coax) then you're not getting 5.1 soun, you're getting simulated surround. So yes, get a digital cable.

3.1 is not all that bad. You'll only be missing some sound effects, mostly on action films; and not as much as you think. The rear surrounds are nice, but going with 3.1 in a small room is not a bad decision. However, you should go into the setup and turn off the unused channels. On some recievers not doing this could damage the amps.

You do not need a special cable for the sub, any RCA cable will do fine.
