$1000 remain in budget

Newbie here. I have purchased a sony bravia 52xbr9 lcd tv and will need help with purchasing a reciever and speaker for a grand. Will be using a directv hd reciever and will have to hook up WII and xbox 360 for the kids. Home theatre will be 80% movies,tv and gaming 20% music. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Look at Onkyo HTiB. With the HtiB, you get it all now, and you can upgrade to better speakers later on.

Other than that, I'd say get a good capable receiver and some inexpensive speakers, and expect to upgrade later.

Or, get the receiver and a PAIR of good speakers, and add other speakers later.

How do you find good speakers? Check the brands people seem to enjoy in the Speakers section, then go out and listen for yourself. Speaker selection is terribly subjective!
