Deep Discount Spring 2009 Sale?

#1
Rating: 0
Any word on whether or not Deep Discount will be holding their semi-annual sale again? It's now June, which is the traditional month to have the sale.

I know last fall (Nov 2008), they increased their discount from 20% off to 25% off.

Anyone hear anything about this?

It's usually sometime around mid-June, IIRC.

Re: Deep Discount Spring 2009 Sale?

Following are the dates I've been able to verify for the start of the DDD Spring sale:

June 5 2008
May 31, 2007
June 8 2006
June 17, 2005
June 9, 2004

I wasn't able to find the sale thread for 2003, though it should have been started after the last great purge. Anyway, it should be in the next week or two (but could happen tomorrow).

I've got two years worth to get, since the US dollar shot up just before last year's sale.

40% Ben Katz + 30% Bobby Hill (Texas) + 20% Monica Geller + 10% William Dent. (Wardrobe by George Costanza)

Re: Deep Discount Spring 2009 Sale?

There's no guarantee they'll even have a sale this time. They recently had a coupon for 10% off $40 and since they rarrely have coupons other than their biennial sales, speculation was that sale was replacing the usual 20%/25% sale.

I have a feeling many people are going to be disappointed when July 1 comes around without a DD sale.
Does anyone even click on these "My Collection" links?

ARMAGEDDON!

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Naw, DDD will just lose their business. I've got a ton of DVDs that I've been sitting on for a while now - no Must Haves or anything, just a whole bunch of "Hey, that would be cool to have if it was cheap enough" movies and TV shows. If DDD doesnt do their 20% off sale this year, those potential impulse buys will continue to sit there, untouched.

Yeah but with the sale prices, they probably do a little better than break even on what they pay for the product so losing those sales (and the customers that only shop with them in June and November) is basically meaningless.

Re: Deep Discount Spring 2009 Sale?

The rumor I heard from a friend who works at a sister company of DD's parent is that the sale will be in July (again, he said that he just saw some internal memo on this). Plus, there's a big Buy 1 Get 1 Free Father's Day sale on Anchor Bay product going on right now -- just got the two Mario Bava box sets for $30 -- and they tend not to have any overlapping deals or bargains. I just want to be able to get that David Lynch Lime Green Box on the cheap.

Re: Deep Discount Spring 2009 Sale?

If they didn't make money on their 20% off sales, they wouldn't have them. It's not like they only put clearance items on sale. They apply the sale to everything. They make money of their sales or they wouldn't do them. They don't do them so they can break even.

I said that they "probably do a little better than break even". That money and keeping customers happy must make it worth it to them.

Re: Deep Discount Spring 2009 Sale?

A poster on DVD Talk seems to corroborate what Mark posted here a few days ago- this year the sale (which is back to 20%) will run from mid to the end of July.
I had expected the routine to (finally) be disrupted this year, and even thought there was a strong possibility they would can the summer sale entirely after seeing the 10% off one in May. Another blanket sale one month later made no sense. I had been feeling twinges of regret over pulling the trigger early for that sale, but I won't anymore if the 20% off one is pushed back another month. In fact, that would actually be just about perfect. July has some very strong (and high priced) releases. Hopefully it would run thru the 28th so we could get a good deal on the $350 msrp BSG set.
And for the people that think DD makes money on these sales...they really don't. These sales function as loss leaders. They are designed to attract new customers who will make it a new habit to shop there- rather than being a 'reward' to the customers who only shop there twice a year. After the costs of advertising and hiring on new workers to handle the volume increase, I wouldn't be suprised if they lost money on these. Just look at how many titles that are ordered are immediately classifed as 'back ordered'. This means the sale is NOT being used to clear out excess inventory.

Re: Deep Discount Spring 2009 Sale?

The last comment, about DeepDiscount losing money selling titles at a 20% discount, is probably partially correct. While I'm not part of the wholesale trade, what I speculate, is shown by this example; at B & N they are running a buy two, get one free sale and it appears to be all inclusive, but look closer and you will notice only certain distributors are included. In store, all are included. It becomes very confusing if some titles are excluded during such a sale. This is what DeepDiscount is doing; since most distributors give an allowance, it is being used to offer the discount and for those who don't, DeepDiscount absorbs the lose.

Re: Deep Discount Spring 2009 Sale?

They must still see a net gain in business to make it worthwhile, or they wouldn't continue to run the sale twice a year.

Re: Deep Discount Spring 2009 Sale?

It's usually the week before Father's Day and in mid-November. I probably won't be able to buy any DVDs this time, as much as I want to due to me already in a heap of trouble trying to sell what I have already. ;0
Take a look at my DVDs/Blurays/Various Other formats for sale... If you're cool!a>

Most excellent, thanks!!!

I just placed an order for the back-half of Dark Shadows that I needed (Sets 14-26) to complete my collection. Saved an additional $131.70 with the coupon code.

I also picked up Dr. Who Key to Time Special Edition and the award-winning cartoon series Liberty's Kids for an additional $26.44 savings.
