Home theater information...

Alright well i've recently put together a new home theater and would like to get your opinions/suggestions and any other feedback from you guys. Heres what I have:

42 inch Samsung HD LCD 1080i
5.1 Samsung Surround Sound
PS3
Xbox 360
AT&T U-Verse

Heres how its setup: My TV only has one HDMI port so my PS3,360,U-Verse are all hooked up to an HDMI switch that goes to the TV. From my TV i'm running an optical cable down to my Samsung surround sound so I can use it with all 3 of of my systems. Should I have my PS3 setup for Bitstream or PCM with this current setup?

Re: Home theater information...

Also will I lose any quality running through an HDMI switch? How about running my surroudn sound from an optical cable from my TV?

Re: Home theater information...

Most likely, your TV will NOT pass the 5.1 audio back to the Samsung Surround. The optical out on the TV is only for the internal tuner.

What model Samsung Surround?? Does it have HDMI in? Also, what model TV?

In the "I have to ask" department... Is it too late to reconsider the Samsung Surround (can you exchange it)?

Appreciate the response . I had a feeling that the optical out on the TV was not going to pass the true 5.1 audio out to my surround but it was the only option I could think of for the moment.

Heres the surround sound im using:
Samsung - 1000W 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System with Upconvert DVD Player - HT-Z320/XAA
It has one Optical and one HDMI port.

The HDTV is a couple years old...its a 40 inch Samsung 720P/1080i TV with 1 HDMI and one optical port.

Re: Home theater information...

How many Component Video inputs does your TV have (the red/green/blue ones)?

Re: Home theater information...

OK, according to your links, your HTiB (Surround) does not accept any digital inputs. So you won't be able to connect any of your devices to it (it does not appear to have any inputs at all on the back).

I think your best bet will be to connect your HTiB and your UVerse box to the TV using component cables. Add the red/white audio cables for the UVerse to the TV as well. Use the HDMI switch for your game systems.

Heres why. You can use the TV to switch between the Game/DVD/Cable box without messing with the HDMI switch. This makes it easier to switch between devices. You do not lose any quality by using component since you do not have 1080P TV and you are can not use the HD formats from Blu-Ray.
