HTIB Suggestions Please

Hi all,

My parents just bought a very nice 52" LCD TV (Samsung 650 Series) that I hooked up for them. After getting their components hooked up (DVD Changer, VCR...digital cable box coming tomorrow) I suggested they consider dumping their very old Aiwa stereo minisystem for a nice HTIB. I would like to get them something complete, with reciever/amplifier unit and all five speakers (think Klipsch Quintet with a modest size sub...size) and their budget would have to be around 800 out the door.

Does anyone here have any suggestions? Maybe something you use in your bedroom or family room that you like?

The reason I am not suggesting a seperate Reciever is for ease of use. They are way out of the tech. loop and it can't be hard to operate, or they will be unhappy. I used to have to set their VCR clock for them before they became automatic.

Re: HTIB Suggestions Please

For ease of use, even a HTIB can overwhelm and you won't get the best performance because of their dumbing down. A better strategy would be to get an idiot proof remote (i.e. Logitech) that you can pre-program "activities (i.e. Watch DVD, Watch TV, Listen to CD, Listen to Radio) and do all the set-up and programming for them.

That said, on a satelite/sub system, it's best to cheap out on the small speakers vs the sub as it is easier to handle the upper frequencies than it is the lower ones. That said, the Klipsch Quintet is quite nice but will run you aroung $500. Doesn't leave much for a sub and A/V receiver.

If your parents won't need Blu-Ray or HD-Audio capabilities, your best bang for buck would be to go used as those upgrading to that capability can't sell their used stuff Get a 2-3 year old 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 receiver from Yamaha/Denon/Onkyo and a decent set of speakers and a Logitech remote (I especially like the Logitech 720 with rechargable base...) and your parents will be golden.
