HD-Equivalent To Replace My Receiver

OK, I have a nice question for the experienced people around here:

I have a receiver which is the Sony STR-DB930, which is from 1999.
Now what is a good HD-equivalent, both in quality and features, of today?
I understood, from the person that my receiver was bought from, it was quite expensive back then.
And it sure shows, I mean, the options that are on that thing for 1999 must have been quite high-end.
Now, any brand will do, Sony too, which I'm now familiar with obviously, unless they changed too much.
But preferably kind of staying away from the top/boutique-brands, because I couldn't afford them anyway.
I don't necessarily need like 7.1 or more channels, 5.1 will do, unless it's becoming standard-equipped these days.

So I'd like to know which receivers are an option for me.
Basically featuring enough audio-tweaking-options such as equalizing, speaker-placement, etc.
Of course then DTHD and DTS-MA, or would the latter or even both just boost the price by hundreds anyway?
I'd like to keep the price under say $400-500, I also don't know what the same products might cost here in Europe.

Please let me know, also if you need to know more about features I need or anything like that.

Extra:

I just noticed that there is a new one coming out in my price-range, which is the Sony STR-DH800.
And it looks like I could go with something pretty much like that.
But would it have like inferior or less features compared to mine (not looking at the quality and such)?
For example, if you look at the specifications-list, for "equalizing" it says "bass and treble control"...
Which makes me go like "OK... but my decade-old-one has Mid too...", which I definitely use too.

And I also really wonder about thing like multiple channels, different surround-channels and one or two for stereo.
I should note, that I use the "Auto Format" for my stereo-music and the other 5.1-channels for DVDs.
Then especially use different equalization, each channel its own, to tweak the sounds.
Also more master-controls like subwoofer-level, LFE-level, bass-boost and such things.
Or with all these types of things, am I already talking about higher-end equipment now?

Re: HD-Equivalent To Replace My Receiver

Yes, it no doubt cost a bit when it was new. AVRs, like most electronics, have dropped in price in the past 10 years. For $500 you can get a receiver that has many more features than your Sony.

Check out the Onkyo receivers. In the US you can get an Onkyo 606 for about $500. The 606 is more powerful, has all the features you are used too, and many more you don't have now...

Good to hear that these things have also gone down in pricing.
I guess that's only logical since things like these aren't as new anymore and become less expensive to make.

It would sure be nice to have one like that Onkyo 606, looks promising.
I could even add rear-speakers if I'm not mistaken.
But it's hard to get to know a device unless I plow through its manual or actually use it thoroughly...
I mean, I hate it when I sometimes end up finding out something is not possible
and a whole device just becomes "useless" because of that one thing.
That's what I'm always afraid of anyway, especially when making a big purchase.

It's still quite on the expensive side though.
Now I actually wish it was $500,- which would make almost €380,- and a nice maximum-price.
But it's actually about €450,- here in The Netherlands (cheapest with a quick search) which makes more like $600,-...

When picking a random lower model-number though, say the 506... oh wait, that's not HD...
Or else it would have been "only" €300,- ($400,-).
I guess maybe I should wait for HD-receivers in general to also become a bit more affordable?
However, like the 606 doesn't even have the "new"-tag on it anymore.
So I don't know how much it would go down while being available...

Hay, I actually noticed they have like an online-shop with "factory-refurbished" items.
Is that an option? I guess I could trust that from the brand itself or could I get issues with that?
They don't have much there, but for example that 506 again, for down to €200,- ($265,-).
If they would only have a refurbished 606 like that.
