Oh hell yeah! Doc Savage comes to DVD!

So I was just making the rounds of my usual Bad Movie news pages, when I found DVD Drive-in had a review up for Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze

I haven't seen this thing in decades, back since the original release in the mid seventies (Those green snakes freaked the hell out of me). And yes, I know the movie probably isn't very good, but my tolerance for bad flicks is pretty high (just because it's bad doesn't mean that it's not entertaining) - so I *MUST* have this film!

I checked about with my usual sources - DDD, Dvd Planet and so on. They didn't have anything listed. Best Buy came up dry, Amazon only had the old VHS and I could only find the countless bootlegs through Google - so I assume the movie isn't out yet. Anyone know a release date? Anyone know any more details?

Re: Oh hell yeah! Doc Savage comes to DVD!

I personally know nothing about this film, but it is one of the 165 titles offered as part of the exclusive Warner Archive Collection at WBshop.com - The Official Online Store of Warner Bros. Studios. You can check out the relevant threads about the Warner Archive for more details too.

It's available thru the "Warner Archive" program.

Cheesy as hell, not very good - but oh so golriously so-bad-it's-good, at least from what I remember and what I've read since then. It's been my Holy Grail of Bad Flicks for a while now (ever since I got my R2 copy of Great White a while ago, that is).

Heading over there now. (yeesh - 32 pages of reading? I think I'll skip to the last couple. . . .)

Re: Oh hell yeah! Doc Savage comes to DVD!

I was reading the Doc Savage movie forum over at IMDb and someone had posted a link to the Warner Archive program about the DVD being available.

I ordered 2 copies quicker than you could say "Have no fear, Doc Savage is here!". (If you've seen the movie, you'll remember that line)

Been waiting on this one for a long time.

I wish it wasn't DVD-R and I wish the price had been less but I don't regret buying it. Looks great.

I agree, the quality was excellent; we watched a friend's copy via my JVC DLA-HD350 projector, 92" wide screen and had no complaints.

Re: Oh hell yeah! Doc Savage comes to DVD!

I'm just afriad that the DVD-R will go poof in 4-5 years. I've had some burned last ages and I've had some go bad in a year (or less). If I was kicking out 5 bucks, I'd be ok with highly volitile media, but 20?

I guess I could just back it up to one of the gold master DVDs that I have hanging around from when I archived up my photography. That way when it goes bad, I'll just whip up a new one.

So - on a different note, since I only vaugly remember the film: is it as good (or bad, depending on your point of view) as I recall?

You were losing bad media and/or burning at a speed higher than the media was rated for. Stick to Sony and Taiyo Yuden media only.

Or perhaps the kids left it out on the coffee table one day and the sunlight hit it, allowing the ultraviolets to work on it. There are more possibilities than just bad media. That's one of the downsides to burnt discs.

Re: Oh hell yeah! Doc Savage comes to DVD!

Warner says they are using a new process of bvurning that will keep for years, is what I hear. I bought the dvd as soon as I saw it and I really enjoyed seeing it again. I plan to watch it at least once per year. I am a big fan of the Doc Savage pulps and wish someone would make a good movie about the Man of Bronze. Now I think I will rewatch me Remo Williams The Adventure Begins.

But how could they? If a company knew how to do that, wouldn't it already be available to buy and / or incorporated into DVD burners? There is a demand for it, because the longevity of CD-Rs and DVD-Rs remains questionable, any company that had a new burning method that worked would be able to make a lot of money.

And anyway, WB subcontracted the operation to Allied Vaughn, who, needless to say, was the low bidder for the contract.

I have had dvdrs that lasted years. Depends on the quality of the dvdr itself. A cheap 25 cent dvdr will deteriote quickly. Use a good name brand and it will last years.
