Philips "Cinema" -The first 21:9 TV

Philips - Televisions - Sound and vision

It's an LCD and currently only in 56" size.

For those who prefer their black bars on the sides I guess? When you click on the link it shows examples of how "great" the TV looks stretching 16:9 to 21:9 and 4:3 to 16:9 to fill (or almost fill) the 21:9 screen. Don't worry though, the fine print says, "Of course, you can also enjoy this content in its native format".

Might be great for those who watch mostly 2.39:1 movies.

Were this April 1 I would have dismissed this as a horrid joke. As was stated--the average consumer has enough to worry about, and if anyone needed such a specialized size they are better off getting a projector. The current aspect ratio matches broadcast HD standards and is easily adaptable to the 2:1 and wider aspects preferred by the cinema. I can think of few things more ridiculous and unnecessary.

That said, the ambilights look fantastic.

Well, I suppose it would be good for a home theater where you want a constant height for your image (side curtains perhaps?), but do not have total light control.
