New to forums, kinda new to HT

Good Day all,

I'm in the process of building a new home. We take possession June 2nd, and I've dedicated an area in the new finished basement for a home theatre. The house comes with 5 Boston Acoustic speakers, 1 center channel, fronts and rears. There is also 3 other sets of Bostons throughout the house. This is where my questions begin.

1. Can any of you give me a projector suggestion. I will be running BR, and HD Satellite. Cost is defiantly an object of concern.

2. Can any of you list of receivers that I can use for this system. I'll need 3 HDMI inputs, and possibly an input for a PC, the PC input doesn't really matter, DVI is the most likely.

3. This is where thing get interesting. The image link below gives you an idea of what I'm trying to do. I want to place the sub in the adjacent utility room. I will create a small port in the wall, so that some sound can make it into the viewing area. Is this even a good idea? Its more for my wifes sake than mine, as I like seeing the equipment that I buy.

My total budget for Projector, Screen, Reciever, and Sub will be around 5k.

Any help you all can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Jamie

Edit the fronts are no longer in the ceiling, they are flush mounted in the front wall.

Re: New to forums, kinda new to HT

1) Try to put a budget amount just for projector, then it will be easier to help
you. Also, decide bewteen LCD and DLP first to narrow choices down. Will projector be ceiling
mounted, or put on a shelf?

2) Budget amount just for receiver?

3) The sub idea is a bad one.

4) You can make your own screen for about $40 if you want to save a lot of
money.

Re: New to forums, kinda new to HT

1. Panny 3000
2. I'm partial to Pioneer (like the Elite 01), but there's many great options for under $1000
3. I would not do this. Not only will it probably result in poor sub performance, but it will also allow for any noise from your furnaces to enter the room. For this same reason, unless you're constructing a good soundproof box in that room, I'd shelf mount the PJ in the theater instead of putting it in the utility room.
4. Look at SVS for subs and Carada for a screen.

Re: New to forums, kinda new to HT

Budget amount for the PJ would be around 1750 - 2000, and as far as dpl or lcd, I don't know. Whatever would look the best for BR, HD sat, and PS3 gaming.

Budget amount for receiver would be tops 1000. All I need is 5.1, and 3 HDMI inputs. Another question just popped into my head. Is there a way to have multiple inputs running to various outputs? Meaning if I want to run an ipod to different speaker locations in the house, and run a movie at the same time? Is this possible?

I have to put the PJ in the utility room, the wife would frown upon running cables through the wall for a ceiling mount. Thanks for the advice regarding placing the sub in the utility room, this also raises another stipulation, size! I would like to keep the sub as small as possible. So for the sub, I'm looking for 300-500 dollar range, goode sound for the space, and keep the size small.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all!

You don't have to do a ceiling mount, you can do a shelf mount.

Re: New to forums, kinda new to HT

I have never heard of RBH speakers. Have you auditioned them in a proper listening environment? If they sound good to you, that is all that matters. Is the sub large enough to meet your expectations. I see the model number as 8.1. If that is an 8" driver, then don't expect action movies to really stand out.

I and many others here are fans of Harmony remotes.

I have the older Panasonic AE-900U projector that is also 720p. It's great.

Re: New to forums, kinda new to HT

FYI

RBH Sound - Manufacturer of High Quality Loudspeaker Systems.

the sub has 2 8" drivers, and I'm told that it will more than fill the space I have.

Re: New to forums, kinda new to HT

I've seen articles on RBH speakers but never paid much attention to them. Great reviews.

As for the sub, if you auditioned it and it meets your expectations then that is great. It only goes down to 35hz. Most of us here try to reach the 20hz mark to really feel those action movies. My sub plays an octave lower than yours but it requires dual 15" drivers. My next project is to reproduce the next lower octave in the bass region. Doing that will require four 18" drivers.

I looks like you have picked out some quality equipment to meet your needs. When you are ready to upgrade and everyone upgrades, we will still be here.
