Sub not outputing on some inputs

I have a Yamaha RX-V663 receiver outputing to a 5.1 speaker set. When DTS or DD is being input the sub works great, for instance my PS3 or cable box. However when I plug my iPod in via an RCA cable to 1/4 inch headphone cable only the right and left speakers output. I have checked my settings and I have the LFE outputing only through the sub. I have the iPod plugged into the CD input on the receiver.

Anyone know why the sub would not kick in on the CD input? I have also tried the iPod on different inputs with the same results.

You are listening to a 2-channel source, so you should only be hearing the left and right mains. If you want the sub on try setting all your speakers to small and LFE to both. See if it makes a difference. If it does not, try changing the soundfield from stereo to Prologic. This should turn on the sub but also tries to play the source music in 3.1 or 5.1 surround which is not how it was recorded and is not how it is meant to be heard.

I have a Yamaha RX-V995 and listen to some CDs and a lot of MP3 from my laptop and ipod, but I leave the soundfield set to stereo and I have my mains set to large and LFE to both when I do.

Or another way is to run audio interconnects from the receiver to the L/R inputs on your sub in addition to the LFE interconnect. I use this setup on my Martin Logan Dynamo. Therefore don't have to worry about changing your receiver to small speakers which is maybe not what you don't want when listening to HT. With that said I don't know anything about that receiver and I am assuming your sub has the necessary connections. Of course your sub crossover will take care of the Hz from the audio interconnects.

I have a yamaha HTR-6140 and if I have the fronts set to large and the lfe just set to sub it doesnt put out any sound threw the sub. You can eather change your fronts to small or change the lfe to both fronts and sub. What I ended up doing was keeping my fronts set at large and changing the lfe to both fronts and sub threw the sound menu in manual set up.
